At the Student Senate meeting on Wednesday, Senator Aaron Ford proposed emergency legisla tion on a bill that would call for the administration to begin re search on a multicultural class that would be required of all students. The proposal was sparked by the recent alleged incident involv ing questionable racial behavior in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraterni- ty- Ford said that he wanted the Anti-Racial Insensitivity bill to be emergency legislation because of the importance of the topic. "If we put this (incident) on the back burner, it will continue to burn, and you will see a fire that you can't put out," Ford said. Other senators, however, felt that they needed time to consider the bill and let a new committee research and rewrite the bill. "I do not agree with having a bill voted upon w’hen we haven't had ample time to talk to our con stituents," Senator Jeff Erler said. "That way we can deal wdth the facts, and not the emotions that are involved." Guest speaker Jamey Webster, president of the Interfraternity Council, said he wholly' supports Ford's proposition, but he does not want the incident to beHj out of proportion. "I think everyone go ings more than facts," ft said. " I feel that this situafat be detrimental to the Greet tern if it got dragged into the* er like the (sexual harassimta es in the) Corps did." Senator Patty Warh helped introduce the bill, "This should not beco®, wi tch-hant," Warhol said,‘1 Corps situation became at# hunt. This is just anaveml something to get doneaboctl problem.' Emergency legislationfoii bill was denied, but itwiUbej on the floor for a vote at th Senate meeting. The FAh L Wo> EiJCOU AJbTiejB ; To otm RACB. , WAK. Correction Baseball's Nolan Ryan In the Oct. 26 edition of The Battalion, it was incorrectly reported that a donation of two cans of food will be necessary in order to receive a $1 discount at the Off-Campus Aggies haunted house, located in the gray building next to the Second Chance Store on Church Street. Only one can of food is necessary to receive the discount. gets his own highway THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ALVIN — The Alvin Express got an expressway named after him Thursday. Hometown boy Nolan Ryan, Texas' most famous baseball play er, climbed into a cherry picker that took him to the top of a big g reen highway sign, peeled off the lack plastic wrapping and for mally made Texas Highway 288 in Brazoria County south of Houston the "Nolan Ryan Expressway." "It is indeed an honor," Ryan said. "It is going to be exciting to drive down 288 and see this sign." The four-lane freeway to carry Ryan's name stretches for about 30 miles from the Harris-Brazoria county line to Freeport. The city council in Alvin, where Ryan and his family live, and the Brazoria County commissioners asked the Texas Legislature to designate the freeway in honor of their most fa mous native son.
