Houston museum hosts collectiol of funeral industry memorabilia THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON— A new museum opening this week in Houston dwells on a subject some people spend their lives avoiding, but op erators think others will be dying to get a look. The American Funeral Service Museum opens its doors Thurs day with the nation's largest col lection of items marking the de velopment of the funeral home in dustry in the United States. "Funeral service is a fascinating topic that many people are curi ous about, but few know much about," says Robert Waltrip, founder and chairman of Hous ton-based Service Corporation In ternational, the largest owner and operator of funeral homes in North America. The museum is his idea. "To my knowledge, no one else has tried to capture and preserve very much of the history of funer al service," he says. "We thought it was time to do it before an im portant part of the past is lost and forgotten." "The industry, the profession, is one .people are reluctant to deal with because it's death," adds Glenn McMillen, the museum president. "But people will come for a lot of different reasons. One will be for pure morbid curiosity. Others will come for learning ex perience. Some will come to see antique automobiles and horse- drawn vehicles." Planning for the museum began 14 months ago. Earlier this year, museum organizers sent notices to nearly 35,000 funeral hony rectors asking them to clean 11 ! their back closets. "The response from the try has been outstanding,^ because there's never been^ thing of this magnitude pt^ gether to chronicle our McMillen says. The museum includes 23t l,i torized or horse-drawn hearsei 1 funeral vehicles and one 1# sleigh. The oldest is an $ horse-drawn hearse. The moil 1 * cent is a 1941 Ford hearse-airf* lance. The funeral sleigh cat from a funeral director in Oregf who found it in Pennsylvania, Also on display are dozens* coffins and caskets, some pr^ ing the Civil War. See Museum/Page'
