The entire production is orga nized and run by A&M students who are part of the American Lab oratory Theater Project. The pro ject, which began this semester, accepts 10 theater arts students HEAVY METAL A Cultural Sociology Deena Weinstein, DePaul University especially like the parts where she compares the mid ’80s thrash-rock incursions to the Protestant Reformation, and where she distinguishes between ‘broad metal’ (which doesn’t mean Lita Ford and Vixen) and ‘narrow metal.’?} —Chuck Eddy, author of Stairway to Hell: The 500 Best Heavy Metal Albums in the Universe 66 This is, quite honestly, the first book on the subject of heavy metal (and I’ve read them all) that approaches the subject from an intelligent point of view. Whether you’re a heavy metal fanatic or someone who’s scared to death of the genre, there’s a lot to be learned here.?? —Jim Filiault, Metal Blade Records * 6 A very informative book about heavy metal. Deena Weinstein obviously did her research.?? —Scott Ian, Anthrax 6i Deena Weinstein’s book is thoroughly insightful; the first to really examine heavy metal’s fascinating appeal, it investi gates not only the ‘what,’ but also the ‘why’ of the heavy metal phenomenon.?? —Larry Getlen, LGPR 1991 0-669-21837-5 $24.95 For credit card order#, caU toU-Jr-ce 1-800-323-7445 Or send a check to: f*t LEXINGTON BOOKS PUBLISHING FOR PROFESSIONALS An Impiinl of Macmillan, Inc. 866 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10022 every semester to coordinate pro ductions at the Fallout Theater throughout the year. Senior Steven De Korne is the production manager of the Fallout Theater. De Kome, who plays Mr. Vaughn in "Courtship," said the program has given him a more structured theater experience. "The program has given me an all-around education," he said. "I'm not learning just one aspect of the show. When I graduate. I'll be able to get a job in administra tion, such as box office manager or production manager." Holly Hill, costume designer for the play, said she enjoyed learning about the style of dress and the different class structures that existed at the turn of the cen tury. Hill said she began researching at the beginning of the summer to find patterns for costumes of the early 1900s. "Research is very important in order to get a correct look on stage," she said. The play is set in the small make-believe Texas town of Har rison in 1915, and surrounds the fictional Vaughn family. Theoll- est daughter, Elizabeth, whoisiii her early twenties, />lans to m® a young man named Horace de spite her parents' disapproval. Jessica Lowe, who plays Eliza beth, said the play is modem com pared to its time setting, and thal the Vaughn family is not very ical of the early 1900s. For example, Elizabeth a ed two years of college before be coming a piano teacher, and younger sister Laura wassentli boarding school for her higl school education. Because "Courtship" has a pro gressive angle, Lowesaidskt feels most students will enjoyte play. "Though in a different time pe riod, it's one of the few plays fe has been locally written,"skf said. "It's something that's a pari of our heritage." "Courtship" debuts Thursday Oct. 8 and will play Oct. 9-10,15- 17, and 22-24 at 8 p.m. in theFal- out Theater.
