SVETI STEFAN, Yugoslavia (AP) — Bobby Fischer battled Boris Spassky to a draw Thursday in the second game of their $5 million rematch that marked Fis cher's return to the game after 20 years. Fischer fought back after a strong start by Spassky, but final ly offered the draw after the 59th move by his old rival and after seven hours of tense, exhausting play. Under the rules of the match, draws do not count for points, leaving the score 1-0, after Fisch er's convincing opening victory in a six-hour contest Wednesday. The contest is being held in this elegant Adriatic sea resort in defi ance of U.N. sanctions against Yugoslavia. Their next game is Saturday. Fischer, 49, gave credit Thurs day to his old opponent, the same man he defeated in 1972 come America's first and on 1 chess world champion. "Boris had a good gamei then he made a few slips," Fi er said. "I had a winning chana . . the end is a clear draw." Spassky, a 55-year-old Russi now a French citizen, concedi he simply "played badly" infi middle of the game. Spasskv played white at opened the game at3:30p with the Samisch variation.Fisd er adopted the King's Indiandi fense to appreciative "oohs"fioi the audience. Given Spassky's early positi® al advantage, chess experts we impressed by the strength of Fi cher's middle game. Some said! came close to beating Spassi outright. "Fischer's not much won than he used to be — thatmea he's one of the best in the world Icelandic grandmaster Meigi Petursson said. Call Corporate 1-800-779-5650 AUSTIN — State officials are confirming that the bees which stung John Jandt and his dog. Blue, last month in Seguin were Africanized honeybees, the so- called "killer bees.'^ Because of the finding, the state has extended to Guadalupe County and its southern neigh bor, Wilson County, a quarantine restricting the movement of com mercial bee operations. That quarantine now covers 37 Texas counties. Jandt's sister, Guadalupe County Attorney Elizabeth Jandt, said that on Aug. 22, her brother was on a riding lawn mower, cut ting grass in his yard, when bees began pouring out of a previously undetected hive in a mesquite stump. "He probably got 25-plus stings. His dog got it worse," said Ms. Jandt, who came running when she heard her brother's shouts. The bees chased Jandt to a back door of his house. When he got inside, they swarmed on the screen. He tried to go out anotln back door, but "they were war ing at the other back door and ti front door," his sister said. Meanwhile, in a backyard pe Blue, a 140-pound Great Dai* was fighting his own battle wit the bees. "He just like to went crar He'd dug out of his pen,"Mi Jandt said. "The dog must gotten between 100 and welts." The dog now "is doing01 He's got one eye that's puffy, she said. Her brother also recoverec Ms. Jandt said she receivedahal dozen stings. A sample of the bees was ana lyzed at the Honey Bee Identifica tion Lab at Texas A&M Univeisi ty and later by the U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture. Texas A&M officials notified the family this week that theiia sects were killer bees, Ms. ‘ said Wednesday. Although the hive has beendt stroyed, she said, "I'm sure then are more around." WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER E ngineering student? Smart. Math or science major? Also smart. On tests, you probably run equations over again to make sure they’re right. So you’re working harder. \bu don’t have to do that anymore. Not when you use the TI'68 Advanced Scientific or TI'85 Graphics Calculator, with their last equation replay feature — and many other smart functions. We’ve spent years with students like you and educators like your profes sors to develop the TI'68 and the TI-85. That’s why they’re so highly recommended. For engineering students, the TI-68 solves up to five simul taneous equations, has complex number functions and offers formula programming. The TI-85 builds on the power of the TI-68 by adding a wide range of graphing capabil ities. Math students can handle calculus problems more easily. And technical students can see the functions for a better understanding of problems. The TI-85 also handles complex numbers. Matrices. Vectors. Lists. Strings. Plus, it offers a powerful one-equation SOLVER. Try a TI-68 or TI-85 at your local TI retailer today. And start working smarter. Instead of harder.
