Politics Wednesday, August 26,1992 The Battalion Page 9 Democratic women face GOP assaults Bush proposes to rejuvenate job-training without tax raist The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore fired back Monday at Republican assaults on Mrs. Clinton and painted the GOP as a party that wants to bash "other people's families" rather than solve family problems. "They had their chance to talk about the future . . . and instead they chose to Clinton make up stories and launch verbal grenades/' Mrs. Clinton said in her first detailed reply to last week's attacks on her at the Republican National Convention. She and Mrs. Gore gave a double-barreled response on Monday morning's talk shows, appearing on NBC's 'Today" and "CBS This Morning'^ in interviews taped during the Clin- ton-Gore campaign's weekend bus tour of the Rust Belt. Also Monday, the two women were fea tured in a Cable News Network spot. It was their first national exposure since last week's GOP convention in Houston, where President Bush's supporters focused on values and aimed much of their fire at Mrs. Clinton, a Yale-educated lawyer. Conservative Patrick Buchanan cast Mrs. Clinton as a radical feminist who likens mar riage to slavery. Marilyn Quayle got in a more subtle dig, saying liberals are disappointed "because most women do not wish to be liberated from their essential natures as women." Mrs. Clinton told CBS that Mrs. Quayle's remark was "a bit of an insult to today's mod ern women, most of whom are working moth ers and struggling very hard to balance their family's needs with the family's economic needs." U.S. Rep. Mickey Edwards, a 16-year congressman tainted by the House bank overdraft scandal, ran third in a field of five candi dates. Edwards, 55, the fourth-rank ing Republican member of the House, conceded defeat in a tear ful statement. With 62 percent precincts re porting, Bill Price, a former U.S. attorney, had 36 percent. State Rep. Ernest J. Istook had 33 per cent. Edwards had 25 percent. Two other candidates trailed far behind. Edwards, seeking an eighth term, asked voters in his Okla homa City district to forgive him for writing hundreds of bad checks in Washington. Price and Istook stressed congressional re form. U.S. Rep. Mike Synar, a 41- year-old Democrat first elected to Congress in 1978, faced three op ponents. With 67 percent of the vote counted, Synar had 43 percent and Drew Edmondson had 39 percent. President Bush proposed a $2 billion-a-year package of new and retooled job-training programs Monday and said they could be paid for without raising taxes. "We can get everybody engaged in high-tech jobs with this retraining approach," Bush promised. He said the $10 billion cost over five years would be paid for by cutting spending for other, unspecified federal programs. "He just got through telling us at the convention we were going to have huge tax cuts paid for by huge spending cuts in amounts to be unspecified, and now he's come out with a huge spending program," Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton said at a news conference in Little Rock, Ark. "I think it's very difficult to take this seriously." Bush unveiled his plan at a vocational training school in Union, N.J., before flying to Connecticut for a fund-raising luncheon in Middlebury and a speech to businessmen Ansonia. The lunch raised abt. $100,000 for the state Republic Party, according to campaij spokeswoman Torie Clarke. At Warsaw Park in Anson; Bush railed against Clintoi economic proposals, which said included the largest I increase in history. Richards said, "That old stuff about divisiveness, trying to say this group of women are OK and this group of women are not — or this group of men, for that matter, are OK, and this group of men are not — that's not what this country was founded about." "Our future is going to be dependent on all of us believing and supporting each other," she said. "So I just don't think that stuff's going to work. Too many women have to work." Texas GOP Chairman Fred Meyer said there were "very, very few references to Hillary" during last week's Republican National Convention. He said that Democrats, not Republicans, divide people. "They are the party of divisiveness, and of emphasizing differences, and not the fact that first we're all Americans. That's the Republican message," Meyer said. Richards, who was vacationing in Mexico during the Republican convention, said she was "really proud" of the way Houston handled the event. "I thought they did a fabulous job," she said. She said she was neither offended amused by state Treasurer Kay Bailey Hutchison's play on Richards' famous linetkl George Bush "was born with a silver spoi his mouth." Richards made the remark attke 1988 Democratic National Convention. Hutchison said in her speech to the convention that Richards "was born silver roots in her hair." Richards, a former state treasurer, said thu she had spoken to Hutchison beforetk convention. She said she had told Hutchison si thought news stories portraying tl Republican as following in Richards' footstej were unfair to the current treasurer. Sick & Tired?
