Military develops she against fire ant stings The Associated Press SAN ANTONIO — An allergy shot consisting of ground-up fire ants could help people who are sensitive to the insect's stings, a military doctor says. Dr. Ted Freeman, chairman of allergy and immunology at Wil- ford Hall Air Force Medical Cen ter, said the only preventive treat ment for people sensitive to fire ant stings has been an injection of whole-body extract produced by grinding up the ants. A large percentage of people are sensitive to fire ant stings and could develop symptoms such as swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat and a rash. "The body produces an im munologic response to fire ant venom, and subsequent stings can bring on symptoms," Freeman said in Tuesday's editions of the San Antonio Express-News. In the first study proving the value of the fire ant shot, pub lished this month in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Wilford Hall doctors followed 65 patients who received the shots and 11 who didn't. Of the 65 receiving preventive treatment, only one suffered a re action to later stings, thestn showed. Of the 11 whorecei' no treatment, six suffered is tions. Later, 30 of the 65 volunlet: to be stung in the laboratory der close supervision. Nones; fered allergic reactions. People who suffer relativi minor symptoms from fire stings — mild facial swelling widespread rash —are cons ered at high risk to develop® serious symptoms from stings. Freeman said. "Those people are at risk,; though they may not think lli are, and they should see an gist," Freeman said. An earlier study on peoples sitive to the sting of honeyliti and yellow jackets cast doubt whole-body extract shots inlat of immunotherapy madeoi; from the venom. Freeman said Wednesday Te> Minon But venom is difficult to obt in useful quantities fromthetii fire ant. Freeman said, so whole-body extract has remain; in use in areas where fire ants prevalent, roughly from Ten; eastward and from North Grci na southward. Fire ants are believed tohai been imported to the Unite States from South America. D-FW AUSTIN nority intei ate bound; not asking boundaries tion. The sta 1 panel's rej< map draw) of a court- tions. "You can't get an accurate picture of a car's exhaust by lookings: while the engine is idling," Roger Meacham, Environmental Protect Agency spokesman, said. "Most pollution is done when a cariszoot ing down the freeway." Dynamometer tests would use computer-aided diagnostic eqm; ment so sensitive that millions of poorly maintained cars which pai current emissions tests would probably fail, requiring repairs. Butft treadmill test was expected to cost up to twice as much as the nine; $19.25 state inspection in the area, in addition to any extra repairs, 'The cost of sending every car or truck to some centralized teste; facility is completely unwarranted," said U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Eni a House Energy and Commerce committee member. "What we should do is concentrate on catching the few cars that® doing the most polluting." Numerous federal and university studies have shown thatmo! than half the total pollution comes from 10 percent of the cars. Airqui ity in the Dallas-Fort Worth area isn't as bad as that of Houston olf Paso, said state officials. But it remains a non-attainment area fort quality because of the times that federal pollution limits have been® lated. For 15 days in 1990, air in North Texas was comparable to that ink; Angeles, state control board officials said. That figure dropped to lli 1991. So far this year, there have been seven days in which air pollute exceeded federal limits.
