O. Henry Museum in Austin holds 15th annual Tun-f
AUSTIN (AP) — English can
get pretty anguished in the O.
Henry Pun-Off World Champi
onships.
But that's OK, because organiz
ers say whoever makes the audi
ence "eeek" shall inherit the mirth
in this annual survival of the wit
test that sees losers gonged with
the win.
Bad jokes or not, spectators
flock to the contest that last year
drew a crowd of nearly 2,000.
They have groan to love it.
"It's jest for a wordy cause,"
explains a flier from the O. Henry
Museum, which will hold the 15th
annual pun and games on May 3.
The Pun-Off, one of Austin's
more whimsical cultural events,
really is for a worthy cause.
The contest is sponsored by
Friends of the O. Henry Museum
and PUNY (Punsters United Near
ly Yearly). It helps raise funds for
the museum, which is housed in
the cottage that was home to au
thor William Sydney Porter —
better known as O. Henry — dur
ing part of his time in Austin dur
ing the 1880s and 1890s.
Valerie Bennett, museum cura
tor, said O. Henry displayed a
great sense of humor in his stories.
She also points to the witticism in
his "Rolling Stone" newspaper,
published while he lived in
Austin.
So the pun competition is a nat
ural for the museum, she said.
"It started out in fun and just
grew and grew and grew. Last
year, we had an attendance of
about 2,000. We're attracting peo
ple from all over the country," she
said.
Bennett said punsters enjoy the
contest because the form is not al
ways welcomed elsewhere.
"The people who are involved.

United Way Affiliates Report Little Damagi
By The Associated Press
Most United Way affiliates say
they haven't been seriously hurt
by stories about the Concorde-
and-limousine lifestyle of William
Aramony, former head of the
charity's umbrella group.
Affiliates across the country are
taking no chances, though. From
Richmond, Va., to Anchorage,
Alaska, they have been taking
pains to distance themselves from
the national organization's head
quarters in Alexandria, Va.
And they're waiting anxiously
to see what will happen in their
next fund-raising campaigns,
most of which won't be until fall.
"We're concerned," said Mary
Ruth Austin, spokeswoman for
the United Way of Greater Tampa
Bay Inc. in Florida. "We've had
some donor cancellations and
we've spent a good deal of time
addressing some legitimate ques
tions from donors about what
we're doing with the money we
take in."
Of more than 50 United Way
affiliates surveyed by The Associ
ated Press last week, only a few
reported a significant decline in
donations since Aramony
signed under fire in February.
Officials of many charitiest
depend on United Waysimili
said they have noticed no in®

Aramony, who earned
year, traveled on the Concoi
and was chauffeured
