(AP) - Chris Mullin scored 29 points and the Golden State Warriors cruised past the Dallas Mavericks 110-91 on Wednesday night to snap a two-game losing streak. After consecutive losses to the Western Conference-leading Port land Trail Blazers, the Warriors opened a one-game lead over the Phoenix Suns and the Utah Jazz in the race for the conferenece's sec ond-best record. The Warriors play the Suns on Saturday night. Golden State shot just 42.5 per cent from the field, but made 33 of 43 free throws. The Mavericks, who lost their third straight and 18th in their last 20, made 37.8 per cent of their shots from the field and equalled the lowest point total of a Golden State opponent this season. Rookie Chris Gatling scored a career-high 18 points and Billy Owens and Tim Hardaway each added 13 points for the Warriors. Sarunas Marciulionis did not play. Mike Izzulino and Herb Williams scored 14 points apiece to lead Dallas. Elliott plays with injury, leads Spurs past Lakers INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Adhesive tape played a key role in the San Antonio Spurs' 102-94 victory over the Los Angeles leakers on Thursday night. Spurs forward Sean Elliott, who dislocated the little finger on his right hand April 1 against the Lakers, entered the rematch in a shooting slump. In Tuesday's 95-92 loss to Houston, Elliott made only one of 10 shots and finished with just five points. Against Los Angeles, howev er, Elliott scored a season-high 33 points, success he attributed to a minor change in the way his finger was taped. "After the injury, I played three games with my pinkie and ring fingers taped together and 1 just couldn't get a grip on the ball," Elliott explained. "I had missed so many open shots that 1 decided to tape the pinkie by itself and it really made a differ ence tonight. "1 felt like myself again." Elliott, who had 23 points in the first half, was 14 of 19 from the floor and played all 48 min utes in the win over the Lakers. Terry Cummings had 22 points and 12 rebounds for San Antonio. With the defeat, the Lakers fell one-half game behind the Houston Rockets for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth. The Rockets de feated Minnesota 107-102. "Obviously this was a very disappointing loss for us," Lak ers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "It was an important game and unfortunately, we came out flat. Cummings' tip-in gave the Spurs an 88-78 lead with 8:39 left before the Lakers closed to 90-86 with an 8-2 run, capped by Sedale Threatt's 17-foot jumper with 5:39 remaining. With 2:05 left, Ferry Teagle, who finished as the Lakers' lead ing scorer with 18 points, hit a short jumper to pull Los Angeles to 94-92. Olajuwon, Rockets win 4th straight MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Hakeem Olajuwon scored 26 points and sparked a 23-9 fourth-quarter run with a back- board-shaking jam Thursday night as the Houston Rockets won their fourth consecutive game, 117-102 over the Min nesota Timberwolves. Otis Thorpe had 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Rock ets (41-36), who moved a half game ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth. The Lakers were beaten by San Antonio on Thursday. Backups Sleepy Floyd and Avery Johnson also played a major role after point guard Kenny Smith couldn't return from an ankle injury sustained late in the first half. Floyd scored 19 points, including two fourth-quarter 3-pointers; John son ran the offense, finishing with seven assists. Pooh Richardson and Thurl Bailey scored 21 points apiece but combined for only one point in the fourth period as the Timberwolves lost for the 18th time in 21 games. The Rockets trailed 84-83 early in the fourth when Olaju- won's rebound basket put them ahead for good. Floyd followed with a 3-pointer and Olajuwon with two free throws for a 90-84 lead. Tennis team faces weekend of tough Top 20 matches Continued from Page 5 as good in doubles, I don't think, as we are, so we have got to win some singles matches because they're good in singles." TCU leads the SWC with a 5-0 record and a 15-3 overall mark. Kent said the Frogs are strong ev erywhere, and it will take a strong effort all around to win. "They have the top three play ers around, so we'll just have to win some at the top, and I think we're capable of doing that," he said. "They don't fall off too much at four, five, and six. It'll be a dog fight there." Last year, the Horned Frogs barely beat A&M in the SWC tour nament finals at the Smith Center. Since A&M has improved this season, Kent looks forward to get ting TCU back to A&M's home court. "I hope we can play well, and I hope we can get a great crowd out," he said. ^When we had the big crowd last year against TCU, they helped us put a scare in a very experienced team. "We need that type of support again this weekend." QB question still up in air Continued from Page 5 right now," Slocum said. "We didn't have enough players in some areas to have an extended type scrimmage." Junior Kent Petty, who is fight ing freshmen Tommy Preston and Matt Miller and sophomore Steve Emerson to replace Bucky Richardson as the Aggies' quarter back, said the position remains unclaimed. "Somebody has to come out on top," Petty said. "Hopefully, it'll be me. If it's some other guy, then the best of luck to him. "It's my last go-round, so I'm working hard to try to get things done." Slocum said the scrimmage didn't reveal much about the team. "It was about what I expect ed," Slocum said. "I told the team afterward that we've got room to improve in all areas. " There wasn't one (area) that really stood out. "I thought our tailbacks (Rod ney Thomas and Greg Hill) did good all day. (Defensive back) Billy Mitchell had a big hit, and I was pleased with the play of Steve Solari. He's shown some im provement." The Aggies will practice next week, Monday through Thursday, and conclude spring drills with three days of practice the follow ing week. Aggies loo; to improvf hitting vs. Continued from Pages the last 21 games. He has a more optima of the slump. "We haven't beenhittl ball well lately," Hickeysajl it's better to struggle earll season than it is to strugglfl the season. "If you're hitting season, it'll take youfartl Hickey has been medical clearance toprai could see some actionaj Longhorns. Gonzalez thinksHicl turn would help the team. "Hitting is contagii said. "We have one of the ting ballclubs around, eryone went into a slump same time. "With Mike Hickey': that should help us." . The pitching staff has bright spot for the staff has given up!2runs last six games. "We're just thinking ing the job/' said senion son Hutchins. "Whenw: the mound, we're not about what the hitters are do. "We just try to hold two runs a game. Wefeei hold them to two runs, we win." One adavantage the have is that the series is in College Station. The has been kind to the Aggies: cent series' history. A&M has won seven nine games against the at Olsen Field, indudi year's three-game sweep. "We've got the Aggie: said Hutchins. "It's at We're pumped." Williams agrees that the field will give the Aggie vantage, but only as long take care of business. "Being at our parkis give us a big advantage,"he "But we still have to pla; game." Since the Longhorns ha a big lead over the rest of tht ference, it's possiblethevwill. the Aggies lightly. "When you'ieSlIlgamesv you can overlook anyone," W shall said. "Rightnow, theydi think we're very good. Wed nitely haven't played up to level." Gonzalez hopes thelongh will overlook the Aggies. "They think we probah hit the slow stuff," he said, going to hit everything theyth us. "I do kind of hope theyim estimate us." Whitley Continued from Page5 But A&M has the p to beat Texas. They've added boost with thep return of injured Hickey. Even thoughRoh Harris is doing a moreth credible job in replacingb' Hickey is the kind ofpil! that can lead a team.
