That's what it felt like to be an Ag gie in Austin Sunday. In one of the most hideous halves of basketball since Dr. Naismith nailed his peach baskets to the wall, Texas an nihilated Texas A&M and showed an Erwin Center crowd of 14,272 and a network television audience that they were worthy of holding the top seed in the Southwest Conference tournament. Everything was going pretty well for A&M in the beginning. After falling behind 8-2 early, the Aggies came back with eight straight points to get their first lead of the game . .. and their last. A&M freshman Damon Johnson scored to even up the game at 12-12 with 12:20 to play. That was the last hurrah for A&M. Not only would they not score in the next six and a half minutes, but Texas ran off 21 consecutive points to turn the game into a rout before half time. Most of the damage was done by the long-range bombardment of BJ. Tyler. His three-pointer opened up the flood gates for Texas. He would get ten points in the run and 16 on the See Whitley/Page 8 A&M drops to SWC's tops UT skips past Aggies, 86-63 By Chris Whitley The Battalion AUSTIN - The best and the worst of the Southwest Conference met on the Frank Erwin Center floor Sunday in their regular season finale. The best proved that they were the best, and the worst proved that they were the worst. Texas jumped out to a tremendous lead midway through the first half on the way to walloping Texas A&M, 86-63, and earning a share of the SWC champi onship. The Longhorns finished the regular season with a 21-10 record and an 11-3 conference mark, which ties them with Houston for the league's top spot. The Aggies finish the regular season 6-21 and Edwards named to newcomer team A&M point guard David Edwards was named Saturday to the Associated Press SWC AU-Newcomer Team. Edwards, a sophomore, averaged 14 points and 5.3 assists a game. He also is ranked fourth in the nation in steals. 2-12 in conference play. The game was decided by a 21-0 run by the Longhorns that lasted six and a half minutes. After Damon Johnson's basket tied the game at 12-12, Texas guard BJ. Tyler scored ten quick points, which sparked Texas to a 33-12 lead with 5:47 left in the half. The Aggies would not come closer than 17 points. "We got in a dry spell where we couldn't hit a shot," A&M guard Chuck Henderson said. "We didn't get back on defense that well. Before we know it, we're down by almost 25 points going into halftime." With the game no longer in doubt. Texas pulled out all the stops. Albert Bur- ditt racked up six blocked shots to tie a Longhorn record. Dexter Cambridge hit 10 of 11 from the field to lead all scorers with 22 points. Texas' lead raced up to 33 points until A&M scored ten in a row at the end of the game. "Texas was excellent today," said Ag gie head coach Tony Barone. "I thought they were the first-place team today. Their players were really focused. After their tough loss at Rice, I thought they came in here really ready to play. "They just intimidated us." Texas used a vicious full-court press, which helped force 17 A&M turnovers. Longhorns' head coach Tom Penders said the A&M miscues were a pivotal factor. "Obviously, our defense in the first half really set the tone and got the pace of the game going in the style that we want ed the game played," Penders said. "That was the key to the ball game."
