Truck stop owner sells trio for $12,500 'Tango Frogs' begin trip to Houston CARL'S CORNER (AP) — The giant'amphibians dubbed the “Tango Frogs" will now dance for their supper in Houston. Three of the six polyurethane frogs, which adorned the roof of Carl's Corner truck stop, have been sold to Chuy's restaurant of Austin. The frogs, weighing 500 pounds each, once sat atop a trendy Dallas night spot before moving to Carl's Corner. They survived a blaze at the famous truck stop, but a cash shortage after the fire prompted sale of the three Tango Frogs. "I needed the money," said Carl Cornelius, the truck stop owner who sold the trio for $12,500. "...It hurts. It's like part of my body." The frogs will be displayed outside some of the Chuy's eateries, ending up at a new establishment in Houston. The 8-foot-tall frogs have weathered other obsta cles. They withstood a sign ordinance to remain atop Tango, a Dallas nightclub, but had to go after the club went bankrupt. Then came the blaze that destroyed Cornelius' "truckers' paradise" in August 1990. Cornelius, who helped create the town in 1986 and named it after his truck stop, struggles to pay off debts accumulating since the electrical fire. The frogs were almost all that remained of the truck stop, which had a restaurant, showers, jacuzzis, game room, bar and swimming pool — but no fire insur ance, Cornelius said. The frogs, once capable of moving as if they were dancing and playing musical instruments, cost $25,000 to make. Cornelius said he was thrilled when he had a chance in 1985 to buy them for $6,500. Former Waco artist Bob (Daddy-O) Wade, created the frogs and their mechanical joints. But after years of rain and rust, the frogs no longer move. Officials fear exotic shrimp will harm native variety ARROYO CITY (AP) - The migration of exotic, farm-raised shrimp from ponds to the Laguna Madre threatens the area's native shrimp population and could cause more than $1 million in damages to both industries, state wildlife officials say. Texas Parks and Wildlife De partment officials learned late last week that large numbers of the Pacific white shrimp had migrated from the farms into the Arroyo Colorado after being accidentally released. On Monday, research vessels from the department found Pacific shrimp from the Laguna Madre for the first time in an area north of the mouth of the Arroyo Col orado. "The further we go from the Arroyo Colorado, the less and less we find, but we are finding them in the Intracoastal Waterway. So they're in the bay," said David Simmons, a state technician run ning one of the research boats. The discoveries have outraged commercial shrimpers and wor ried state biologists who think the Pacific shrimp may harbor para sites or viruses that could elimi nate the native white and brown shrimp varieties. The Pacific shrimp also may outbreed or outsurvive the native population, eventually replacing it. "What happened shouldn't have happened," said Julius Collins, a longtime Port Brownsville shrimp fleet owner. "These people were warned if they brought exotic species they had to make sure they wouldn't be released."It might result in a new variety of shrimp, but what if it has a virus or something? They'll wipe out our shrimp," he said. POSTAL JOBS AVAILABLE! Many positions. Great benefits. Call (805) 682-7555. Ext. P-3332. Notice Piano Lessons 822-2242 (Mr. Rutherford) Libya seen as easy scapegoat, expert says Continued from Page 1 punishment. "It's very unlikely that the Libyans acted on their own," Hatchett said. "I'm not saying the U.S. is whitewashing the roles of Syria or Iran, but given their history of support for terrorism, it would be surprising if they weren't involved. "The Iranians had far more reason to strike at America, for the downing of their airliner the year before," he said. "The Libyans might have struck for the U.S. attack in 1986, where Khadaffi's adopted daughter was killed in the airraid." # • Thomas said any action would have little effect on the ongoing peace process, because the Arab nations see the progress made to date too valuable to abandon in defense of Libya. Hatchett said because of the priority given to the peace process, the U.S. officials might be using Libya as a scapegoat. "Although the U.S. has linked two Libyan intelligence officers to the bombing, it is prpjba- ble they were acting on orders of Syrians or Iranians that led them to plant the bomb. "It is tragic and lamentable that hundreds of people were killed when Flight 103 was bombed, stacked against the possibility of ru ining the peace conference, it could seem a sac rifice that must be made," he said. "A decision might have been made to suppress information about Syrian or Iranian involvement for the greater good."
