Not just because it's an estab lished rivalry that has lasted scores of years. Not just because it is perenni ally a pivotal game early in the con ference season. No, the major reason this game is placed higher in priority than many other contests in Jones Stadium is simple: Tech's chances of winning are always good. That's why A&M's 37-14 victory over the Red Raiders holds more im portance than Aggie fans might think. Throughout the week, Lubbock was a buzz of excitement in anticipa tion for the game. T-shirts were made that proclaimed, "The Aggies are coming! The Aggies are coming!" Their excitement was based on the hope that history would repeat itself, as it normally does in Lubbock. A&M sent highly-favored teams to Tech in 1987 and 1989 and both times they came away empty. In the last six contests played in the Riviera of the Panhandle, all were decided by less than a touchdown. But those are only numbers. In 1989, after a bitter and controversial victory, head coach R.C. Slocum was pelted with water balloons by fans in the stands as he left the field. The score remained up on the Jones Stadi- See Whitley/ Page 8 Aggies climb up AP poll A&M ranked No. 21; Baylor moves up to No. 8 From Staff and Wire Reports Texas A&M moved up two spots in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Aggies' 3-1 record was good enough to improve their standing from last week's No. 23 spot up to No. 21 this week. A&M defeated Texas Tech 37-14 in their conference opener last Saturday in Lubbock. Baylor, the only other Southwest Conference member in the poll, also im proved its standing this week after its pounding of the University of Houston last Saturday, 38-21. The Bears entered the top 10 this week at No. 8. The Aggies are idle this week and will prepare for their Oct. 19 clash against Baylor. The Bears host Rice this Saturday. A&M is 1-0 in the SWC, while the Bears are 2-0. ABC television network announced Monday it will regionally broadcast the A&M-Baylor game. Kickoff has been rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. CST. TCU, 4-1, received votes in in this week's poll but failed to enter the Top 25 after its 22-21 upset at the hands of Arkansas. ■Mp SWC STANDINGS Conf. (AP) - Kansas City's defense gave Buffalo's no-huddle offense no hope. The Bills, averaging more than 32 points and 450 yards in winning their first five games in defense of their AFC championship, suffered six quarterback sacks, five lost fumbles and their most lopsided defeat in four years Monday night as the Chiefs romped to a 33-6 vic tory. Christian Okoye, following two Buf falo turnovers, scored two touchdowns two minutes apart as the Chiefs took complete control in the third quarter. Derrick Thomas had four of the Chiefs' sacks, with two of them causing fumbles. Okoye ran for 130 yards, setting a Chiefs record with his 13th 100-yard game, and rookie Harvey Williams rushed for 103. The Bills, held to 210 total yards, still were in the game when Thurman Thomas took a pass from Jim Kelly deep in Buffalo territory and was immediately hit by Lonnie Marts, who knocked the ball loose for Kevin Ross to scoop up and run 13 yards to the Buffalo 17. Steve DeBerg hit Robb Thomas for 12 yards to the 5, then Okoye went over on the next play for a 23-6 lead with 2:52 left in the third quarter. A moment later, Thomas sacked Kelly, knocking the ball loose, and Dan Saleaumua recovered on the 11. On fourth and goal from the 2, Okoye knocked a defender backward into the end zone.
