Page 4 The Battalion Tuesday, October 1,1991 Tuesday, C Redskins roll over McMahon-less Eagles WASHINGTON (AP) - Dar rell Green had two interceptions as Washington posted its third shutout in five games this season, knocking Jim McMahon from the game and remaining unbeaten with an 23-0 win over Philadel phia. Mark Rypien had a 19-yard TD pass to Art Monk and Chip Lohmiller kicked a 37-yard field goal in a 41/2-minute span of the second quarter for the Redskins, who joined New Orleans and Buf falo as the NFL's only unbeaten teams. Lohmiller also had a 35- yarder in the third period and a 27-yarder with 11 seconds to play. Earnest Byner, who gained 95 yards in 27 carries, ran 7 yards for a TD in the fourth period after yet another interception, this one by Andre Collins as Philadelphia was held to 89 yards in total of fense. Btit the game turned late in the first quarter, when McMahon, who had replaced Randall Cun ningham when he went out in the season-opener with a knee injury, sprained ligaments in his right knee as he was chased out of bounds by Wilber Marshall, his teammate on Chicago's 1985 Su per Bowl champions. He had completed four of six passes for 32 yards. Eagles spokesman Ron Howard said it was "not a sea son-ending injury" for McMahon. It was, however, a game-end ing injury for the Eagles, who re placed McMahon with Pat Ryan. Ryan finished 4-for-14 for 24 yards and threw three intercep tions. The best chance for Philadel phia (3-2) came on the first series of the second half, when Rypien stumbled, then fumbled and Wes Hopkins recovered for the Eagles at the Washington 10. But one play later. Green had his second interception — on a pass by Ryan to a well-covered Kenny Jackson in the end zone. Washington wasn't much bet ter on offense — Rypien, who was 13-for-23 for 204 yards, threw two interceptions, fumbled four times — losing two, once halting a drive at the Philadelphia 14. But two plays after that, Collins inter cepted Ryan and returned the ball to the Eagles 7, setting up Byner's TD run. Eric Allen's interception end ed an early Washington threat af ter a 75-yard pass from Rypien to Gary Clark had given the Red skins a first down at the Eagles 7. But the Eagles, meanwhile, never got beyond the Redskins 47 in the first half and after Wash ington knocked out McMahon, it scored 10 points on its next two possessions. First, Fred Stokes sacked Ryan at the Eagles 15, giving Washing ton field position at their own 46 after the punt. Nine plays later, on a third- and-9 from the 19, Rypien found Monk far behind Izel Jenkins and it was 7-0. The Eagles went three downs and out again and this time Brian Mitchell returned Jeff Feagles' punt 14 yards to the Philadelphia 36. That set up Lohmiller's 37- yarder that made it 10-0 with 3:26 left in the half. After Green's second intercep tion stopped the Eagles, the Red skins drove 62 yards in 14 plays to set up Lohmiller's second field goal, which came with 4:38 left in the third period. Ryan gets 5,500 KO in Rangers' loss to Mariners ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nolan Ryan reached the 5,500-strikeout mark and Ken Griffey Jr. became the youngest player in 35 years to drive in 100 runs as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 in 11 innings Mon day night in the first game of a doubleheader. Seattle won its club-record 79th game as Jay Buhner hotnered in the 11th off Wayne Rosenthal (1-4). It was Buhn er's 25th homer, his first 118 at- bats since Aug. 13. The Mariners, trying for their first .500 season, are 79-77. Ryan gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, struck out six and walked three. He got Tino Martinez swinging at a fastball in the fifth for No. 5,500 and then struck Dave Valle in the sixth. Griffey's RBI single in the fifth made him the youngest player with 100 RBIs since De troit's Al Kaline in 1956. Grif fey is 21 years, 10 months; Ka line was 21 years, 9 months. Whitley Continued from Page 3 U.S. nu In 1985, the Europeans won for the first time in 28 years. Two years later, they came to America and won again. Two years ago, the U.S. tied Europe, but since they won it last time, Europe kept the Cup. The United States had spent six years without owning the Ry der Cup — by far, the longest drought ever. The British called American golfers second-rate, said that they weren't near as good as they once were, and even called top-notch tour play er, Fred Couples, a "choker." It was bad blood, and the United States wanted desperately to take them down. At Kiawah Island, South Car olina last weekend, the Cup matches took place, and the Americans had to undergo a slew of problems. First, one of the team mem bers, David Pate, was injured in a car crash. Although he played in one match Saturday, he missed the important singles matches on Sunday. Second, some players ate some bad pasta and contract ed food poisoning. Finally, the course, itself. Winds were at gale-like condi tions which turned the already difficult course into a beast. But despite all these problems, the U.S. and Europe were tied coming down to Sunday's final round. Early Sunday, Europe pulled ahead, but the U.S. came back to gain the lead by one with one match to play. Hale Irwin, three-time U.S. Open champion, and Bernhard Langer, a West German native and former Masters champion, decided the fate of the Ryder Cup. After Irwin took a two-hole lead at 14 and victory seemed imminent, he started falling apart. He made a costly bogey on 17 to put the match all even with one hole left. On the 18th hole, Irwin chipped poorly on his third shot, and would two-putt for a bogey, All Langer needed was to makea six-foot par putt for Europe to tie the U.S. and, therefore, keep the Cup. On any other day, Langer would have made that putt. But Sunday, the gods of golf were smiling on America, and that elusive Ryder Cup is now back where it belongs.
