With 7:00 left in the first quar ter senior quarterback Bucky Richardson left the game with a foot injury. Junior Kent Petty and red- shirt freshman Jeff Granger lead the Aggies the rest of the way. Granger completed 5-of-8 passes for 89 yards, including one touch down. Petty was 1-of- 4 for 46 yards. Richardson's playing status is day-to-day with a sprained arch in his right foot. Granger said he didn't feel any pressure before the game, be cause he wasn't expecting to play, he said. "Everyone was asking me to day if I was nervous, and truth fully I wasn't expecting to be in," Granger said. "I was expecting Bucky to go out there and have a great game. I expected maybe one or two snaps today and when I went out there my stomach started shaking and I was real nervous." The backups always have to be ready. Petty said. "At first I thought it was nothing because he's a tough guy and would shake it off," Petty said. "But when I knew I had to go in and play, I just took a deep breath and tried to stay ready. "If we (the two quarterbacks) just play mistake free football and just not hurt the team, I think that's our job. Jeff and I aren't asked to do the same things Bucky is, but coach expects us to be ready." Richardson thought the team performed well in his absence. "They did fine without me," Richardson said. "I've said be fore, people are looking at me like I've got to carry the weight of this team on offense. As you saw today, that's not the case. I think now people will maybe not con centrate on me so muchandli at guys like Greg (Hill) and Dei Carter and Rodney Thomasi* Wilbert Biggens to carry ball." A number of other injure forced the A&M coaching staf call on young players. Three plays after Richard!.: left the game, junior full Doug Carter left the gamewil sprained ankle. Freshman:, back Cl if Groce rushed for yards on four carries and cauj two passes for 27 yards Carter's spot. One of Groce's catches was 5- yard touchdown grab fn Granger. "It was really excitirtf; Groce said. "I didn't know hi in the end zone and everyboij was saying, 'you're runningas you're already in the end zone just wanted to get in there." And with 14:10 left in the senior tailback Randy Simir strained his knee while makin; 6- yard touchdown dive. Fre: man Rodney Thomas became: backup tailback behind starl Greg Hill. Thomas was nervous abe. playing but overcame it by ms ing for 81 yards on 12 carries. "I was very nervous Thomas said. "As a highschc player to come into collegi; sports that's overwhelming. X. just have to believe in yourself For Thomas the call car without warning. "I was just sitting on the sic- line and coach said 'Rodneys in there.' I said, 'alright.' I was; little nervous, but it's a greatfe ing to get into it." Carter and Simmons aret pected to be ready for Saturda: game against Tulsa. Richardsr and McAfee are listed as prok ble. Despite problems holdirl onto the ball, freshman Wilbej Biggens returned five puntsta 52 yards, including a long of; Biggens also ran for 53 yards:; two tries as the Aggies' kick: returner.
