"Students drink the day of or the night before the game, and the alcohol dehydrates them," he said. "This is especially a problem dur ing hot weather and afternoon games." Frances Gough, a registered nurse at the health center, works the first-aid station during football games and said some cases of de hydration need extra care. "It is a real problem because severe dehydration can create problems for people," she said. "We send the serious cases to the emergency room for fluid replace ment." Dudley Wait, chief of Emer gency Medical Services, said the number one cause of all emergen cy calls to EMS on home game weekends is alcohol-related. "Our number of calls drastical ly increases on home game week ends," he said. "At least one alco hol overdose case is treated dur ing each Friday night yell practice — guaranteed." The EMS staff is increased on home game weekends because of the high number of problems. Wait said. "We have two ambulances — only one is kept fully staffed at all times," he said. "During weekends, we keep both vehicle| fully staffed because’of the inf crease in emergency calls." Wait also said the problem; worse for the first yell practiceaiil game because a number of fres: men are having their first drink™ experience during this weekend "We get a lot of new kidscoml ing in who are experimentingwi;| alcohol and who usually over; it," he said. Wait encouraged anyonee-s ing to the LSU game to drinkifl sponsibly and consume a lotol water before going out into till heat Saturday. Housing continued from Page 1 gins after the spring semester ends." Joseph Reising, a graduate stu dent in finance and president of the Graduate Student Council, said despite initial misunder standings, the University has been very cooperative. "There has been a one-year moratorium placed on the project to allow the graduates living in the duplexes time to come up with alternate plans," Reising said. "This allows the residents nine months to find a place to live that fits in their limited budgets, and save up for a down payment if they need to. "It's unreasonable for us to ask the University not to tear down the duplexes, considering their terrible condition," he said. "But considering the fact the University was tearing them all down before giving the students time to adjust, (this) is a good compromise." Despite the compromise, Reis ing said, graduate student hous ing at A&M leaves much to be de sired. "There just isn't enough low- rent housing for graduates," he said. "It would be nice tohati specially-designed graduate sfc dent housing. I don't know we'll ever get it, but it would be nice recruiting tool to have eve- just a wing of a dorm designate; for graduate students." Powell said a decision has w been reached on what the Ian; will be used for once the demot tion is complete. "At this point, no one has tot me of any plans for the property Powell said. "All we know isms the project to clear the land is ing strong." Vet continued from Page 1 cility. Dr. E. Dean Gage, provost and senior vice president for A&M, said the project is one of the most impressive ever undertaken at the University. "This will be the largest aca demic building project ever at this University," Gage said. "It (the new complex) has been over ten years in the process from the first plans to the ground breaking cere mony on Friday." A team of inspectors from the AVMA was expected to be on campus this week to decide if A&M would regain full ac creditation, but the visit was post poned by the college because it had little to show the inspectors at this time other than plans for the complex. The college had originally re quested that the team come this year rather than in 1993 so that they could put the accreditation questions behind them, but delays in the new project forced the col lege to postpone the visit. "We had a series of delays in getting our new building started," Shadduck said "It took longer to do the design phase than we had planned on. "At the time we arranged the visit for this September, we thought that we would be consid erably further along with the building than we really are. So when we informed the visitors of where we are, they asked to post pone the visit. L d t building, given the budget site tion on the campus this year hi would have suggested thatthei delay their visit and let us wori out our budget problems over tin next couple of years," Shaddud said. Shadduck does not expect tkl new facility to be finished m November of 1993, but he does tv lieve that the AVMA will restorc full accreditation when it seestfd the problems it cited in 1988ai; being addressed by the college.
