Dr. Maggie Olona, the associate director td a counseling psychologist at A&M's Coun seling Center, said she sees approximately six 1 women a month who say they were victims of date or acquaintance rape. She added, howev er, that some of these rapes occurred off cam- ms. Both Zdziarski and Olona encourage any rtdtim of rape to immediately report the crime Bo the police. 'The first thing I was always recommend in individual to do is to file a report with the University police," Zdziarski said. "Even if they don't wish to prosecute or file criminal :harges because it keeps the option open and | available — the sooner they do it, the better off will be for them." Because so few women report date and ac- ; quaintance rape, A&M's student body is un- der the impression A&M tries to cover up the problem, she said. ; g "We want people to come in so we can ad- h dress the problem," Zdziarski said. "Until fHH people are willing to come forward, we can't do anything about it." Despite the low numbers of reported cases, Zdziarski and his staff give seminars to sorori ties, fraternities and other organizations about the definition of rape. Michelle said she was not sure if she was "legally" raped because she knew the man and she volunteered to go to his apartment. "I decided not to say anything to anybody because I felt like it was partly my fault," she said. The report from Ms. magazine states that 27 percent of the women whose sexual assault met the legal definition of rape did not even think they had been raped. Zdziarski explains that society views rape as a crime that happens in a dark alley by a stranger, not by a friend or an acquaintance.Olona encourages women, espe cially freshman women, to know about the possibilities of rape on a campus like A&M. "The most at risk time for rape is from the first day of school to the first holiday," Olona said. "(A woman) is more likely to be raped at that time than any other time in her life - espe cially freshmen." She explains the reasons are due to being unfamiliar with the campus and because they might drink where older male students look for younger women. "If I can say one thing, that's, 'Don't drink with people you don't know,'" she said. "Don't go to places where you don't feel safe. If you feel uncomfortable, leave." Michelle said she wished she was more careful about who she decided to date. "I encourage all women to be careful with who they date," she said. "And I encourage anybody who is a victim of rape to report it. I nev^r did, and I regret it now for the next girl he violates." University officials had spent o weeks formulating the budget rom the appropriations bill re cently passed in the special ses- ■ntrepreneur sion of the state legislature. Gage said the University's main concern now is finding out how the pay increase is to be im plemented. "We called (the Comptroller's office) yesterday and got confir mation, so now we're waiting for official written notification," he said. "Before we can redo the budget again we need the appro priations figures - the Comptroller's guidelines for the money." Gage said after all the budget rewrites the University has done this year, this was one the Univer sity was glad to do. 'But now students can get in volved at the ground level of a rapidly building organization." The A&M chapter plans sever- il activities during the year in- :luding notable guest speakers ind fundraising events, but it em phasizes that increasing member ship will enhance the develop ment of the chapter. "ACE is different than most student organizations because members tire extremely motivated and committed and not just in volved," Martellotto says. ACE activities provide mem bers with education, information and networking opportunities re garding entrepreneurial and busi ness skills. ACE promotes individualism and creativity needed to become a successful entrepreneur. The 20 members already in volved in the organization are out going, motivated and hard work ers, Martellotto said. "There's lots of potential to make ACE an integral organiza tion on the A&M campus," he said. ACE national headquarters, lo cated on the Wichita State Univer sity campus in Kansas, offers local chapters scholarship opportuni ties, valuable information on en trepreneur ventures, national and regional conferences, and meet ings with important professionals and successful entrepreneurs from around the country. Student and professional members work together in the or ganization. ACE is governed by a board of directors that consists of stu dents, professors and business professionals. The A&M chapter will sponsor an informational meeting open to all students at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Blocker 150. For more informa tion concerning the A&M chapter of ACE, call 693-5943. The police do not do anything ibout the gay-bashing problem ?cause they say it does not exist,, te said. But recently the Houston ^olice Department sent officers ^undercover and quickly realized The extent of the problem. To better deal with the prob lem, police departments are begin- ing programs to help officers un derstand and realize the actuality of a gay community, Mazullo said. There has finally been enough pressure from both the communi ty and the gay community to have officers monitor the area and try to control the bashing. Mazullo said the bashers are white teenagers from the suburbs who drive to the area to wait for gay men to come out of bars. "These teenagers come from good families," Mazullo said. "The five youths involved in the murder of Paul Broussard have been arrested and will be tried for murder." Mazullo said these teenagers graduate from high school and then enter college and the problem moves onto the nation's college campuses. Several cases of verbal abuse and harassment have been report ed at A&M, Mazullo said, but no cases of physical abuse have been reported to the University Police Department. Mazullo said, however, the University needs to make it clear that this type of discrimination will not be tolerated or allowed on the campus. Mazullo said everyoyie is. wel comed to attend the vigil for Broussard. BUSINESS MAJORS EARN TAMU CREDIT WHILE STUDYING IN ITALY SPRING SEMESTER 1992 MAKE YOUR RESERVATION NOW!
