Electric wires used to keep birds away DALLAS (AP) — A North Texas entrepreneur is casing non-lethal, electrified wires to persuade birds ‘Intake their droppings elsewhere. "People chuckle and say, 'You do what?,"' said Jichard Selzer of Rockwall. "We relocate birds." Selzer's company. Flyaway, lines building ledges Kith wires that produce enough electricity to per suade birds to flock somewhere else. His method has freed hospitals, hotels, restau- lants, courthouses and churches in several states jiom persistent pigeons and other fowl. | "The word gets out among the pigeons that the I kidding is off-limits," Selzer said. "The birds will :ome up and hover and then go away because they kiow if they don't land, they don't get shocked." The fledgling firm now faces a challenge larger han the fowls it's geared to chase away. Selzer says fie wants to convince the federal government that he an make the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials bird- proof. "They roost inside in the winter and use Thomas Jefferson as a perch," said Dr. Donald Messersmith of the University of Maryland, who's helping determine how to drive out the birds. "The droppings fall on everything." Bird infestations is a major problem at the Lincoln Memorial, which is enclosed on three sides, said Messersmith, a member of a National Park Service project to preserve the two monuments. "The wind doesn't blow through, so it's warmer," he said. "The birds are bad enough that they have to clean Lincoln about once a week." The preservation project's lead architect said he wants to give Flyaway a try because the 4-year-old firm has refined the shocking technology. Unlike older systems, Selzer's uses only one wire per ledge because pigeons land on and take off from the edge in a sort of dive, he said. —THE FIGHTIN 1 TEXAS AGGIE CADET CORPS It’s Not Too Late to Join. ■I No Military Obligation ■ Make Friends For Life ■ Get Something Extra Out of Life Informational Meeting 7:00 p.m. Wed, Sept 4 Rm 229 Rudder For more information call 847-4903 Don’t Just Watch the Traditions Join the Corps and LIVE them!
