License plate sales thrive
Profits boost
University
scholarships
By Tammy Bryson
The Battalion
Texas A&M's Collegiate License
Plate Program has raised almost
$100,000 for scholarships since it
began more than a year ago.
More than 3,800 A&M license
plates have been sold since May
1990, more than all the other
schools put together, said Robert
Smith, Texas A&M's vice presi
dent for finance and administra
tion.
A&M sales constitute more than
60 percent of the total collegiate li
cense plate sales, he said.
Collegiate license plates cost $30
in addition to the standard motor
vehicle registration fee. A $30 re
newal fee also is charged annually
to maintain the scholarship fund,
he added.
"We hope that once people get
an A&M license plate, it will be an
automatic thing to renew them,"
Smith said.
Personalized plates are also
available for an extra $40, along
with the regular $30 fee, he said.
Of the $30 received for each set
of plates ordered, $25 is donated
to the Aggie Pride Collegiate Li
cense Plate Scholarship Fund. This
$25 is considered a charitable do
nation and is tax deductible. Smith
said.
During the 1990-91 school year,
the Student Financial Aid Office
awarded 83 scholarships at $500
each with the proceeds from the li
cense plate program. More than
100 scholarships at $750 each are
expected to be awarded for the
1991-92 school year.
Smith said much time and effort
has gone into marketing the plate
program.
"We have our posters displayed
at every tax assessor's office in
Texas" he said. "When people go
in to renew their car registration,
our poster is right in front of them
in every county in the state."
More than 1,600 car dealers
throughout Texas also have

agreed to promote the collegiate
plates to all new car buyers. Smith
said. Every dealer in the Bryan-
College Station area is involved in
the program.
"Our entire marketing effort
won an award by the Council for
Advancement and Support of Ed
ucation (CASE)," he said. "We're
very proud of that because nor
mally those awards are given to
multi-million dollar capital cam
paigns.
"This program has been suc
cessful beyond our wildest
dreams, and the encouraging
thing is that the numbers keep
picking up," Smith said.
Other schools participating in a
license plate program include Bay
lor University, Incarnate Word
College, Richland College, South
ern Methodist University, South
west Texas State University, Texas
Southern University, Texas Tech
University, University of Hous
ton. University of North Texas,
University of Texas at Austin, UT-
Arlington and UT-E1 Paso.
Applications for the collegiate li
cense plates are available from the
local tax assessor or at any partici
pating college or university.
MS C program
provides
relief for
summer blahs
By Melinda Cox
The Battalion
Summer leaves some peo
ple with too much time on
their hands, but an MSC-
sponsored program might
provide the entertainment
and education those people
might want.
The University PLUS pro
gram offers more than 120
dasses for those whose inter
ests range from aerobics to
yoga.
Costs depend on individual
classes but fees will not ex
ceed $35. Texas A&M stu
dents also receive discounts,
said University PLUS pro
gram coordinator Dana Wil
liamson.
Classes are not just open to
students either, she said. Peo
ple interested in the program,
however, must be at least 18
years old.
"We have a wide range of
people who participate in the
program," Williamson said.
"Classes are open to staff and
faculty members, students
and community members.
"We offer everything from
country-western dance to aer
obics," she said. "The most
popular class is the jitterbug
class held at the Texas Hall of
Fame."
Other classes include
health, CPR, and arts and
craft classes. University PLUS
also offers more than 120 dif-
ferent programs and
workshops. Classes are non
credit programs, so there are
no exams or grades, William
son said.
University PLUS also offers
special-interest programs
such as wedding planning, di
amond buying and bicycle re
pairing. Foreign language
programs also are available.

Legislator announces bid as mayor of Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Relatively unknown
state Rep. Sylvester Turner, calling himself a
consensus builder in a city he contends is po
larized, said Monday he'll challenge five-term
incumbent Kathy Whitmire and try to become
Houston's first black mayor.
Turner, 36, an attorney, has represented a
northwest Houston area district in the Texas
House for two two-year terms. He is a Demo
crat, as is Whitmire, although the mayoral race
technically is nonpartisan.

Whitmire, 44, has indicated she will seek a
sixth two-year term when Houston voters go
to the polls Nov. 5, although she does not plan
a formal announcement until later in the sum
mer. Since her first election in 1981, she has
trounced her opponents, including two for
mer mayors who sought to return to power in
