More than 3,800 A&M license plates have been sold since May 1990, more than all the other schools put together, said Robert Smith, Texas A&M's vice presi dent for finance and administra tion. A&M sales constitute more than 60 percent of the total collegiate li cense plate sales, he said. Collegiate license plates cost $30 in addition to the standard motor vehicle registration fee. A $30 re newal fee also is charged annually to maintain the scholarship fund, he added. "We hope that once people get an A&M license plate, it will be an automatic thing to renew them," Smith said. Personalized plates are also available for an extra $40, along with the regular $30 fee, he said. Of the $30 received for each set of plates ordered, $25 is donated to the Aggie Pride Collegiate Li cense Plate Scholarship Fund. This $25 is considered a charitable do nation and is tax deductible. Smith said. During the 1990-91 school year, the Student Financial Aid Office awarded 83 scholarships at $500 each with the proceeds from the li cense plate program. More than 100 scholarships at $750 each are expected to be awarded for the 1991-92 school year. Smith said much time and effort has gone into marketing the plate program. "We have our posters displayed at every tax assessor's office in Texas" he said. "When people go in to renew their car registration, our poster is right in front of them in every county in the state." More than 1,600 car dealers throughout Texas also have SCOn D. The University leads the participating Texas schools in sales, boasting 3,800 since May. agreed to promote the collegiate plates to all new car buyers. Smith said. Every dealer in the Bryan- College Station area is involved in the program. "Our entire marketing effort won an award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Ed ucation (CASE)," he said. "We're very proud of that because nor mally those awards are given to multi-million dollar capital cam paigns. "This program has been suc cessful beyond our wildest dreams, and the encouraging thing is that the numbers keep picking up," Smith said. Other schools participating in a license plate program include Bay lor University, Incarnate Word College, Richland College, South ern Methodist University, South west Texas State University, Texas Southern University, Texas Tech University, University of Hous ton. University of North Texas, University of Texas at Austin, UT- Arlington and UT-E1 Paso. Applications for the collegiate li cense plates are available from the local tax assessor or at any partici pating college or university.
