What is there here to tells him not to go play in Austin at the Frank Er win Center? A&M has taken care of that question with its plans to build the 14,500-seat Special Events Center supposed to be ready for the 1993-94 season. Former A&M head basketball coach Kermit Davis freely ad mitted during the season he and his staff waved pictures of the new arena in front of recruits' faces. He wanted to let them know that they would play at least part of their careers in the new arena. Parallels between the school's football and basketball programs can be drawn here. R. C. Slocum took over as A&M's head football coach two years ago, and put the team's troubled past behind him by set ting his sights on the positive things about A&M that he could use to build his team. Slocum had Kyle Field to show potential recruits, and the tradi tion of the 12th Man standing in it. The image of 72,000 filled seats usually helps sway re cruits. The new arena will do the same for the basketball team's future coach. Slocum can attribute a lot of the success of his teams to one of the best recruiting staffs in the nation. Tim Cassidy, A&M's recruit ing coordinator for football since 1989, assembled a recruiting team that scoured the nation to find the players that will win games for Slocum and the Ag gies. Cassidy and his staff were re sponsible for a recruiting class ranked second in the nation last year and close to the top again this year. He has been ranked by the Sporting News as one of the na tion's top 10 recruiters three times. Too bad he can't spread that wealth over to the basketball program. A new coach that comes to A&M will have to develop an or- /ru ganized gameplan when it comes to recruiting, and turn it into the science that Cassidy has for the football team. But what might be most im portant is the fact that a recruit wants to know he is going to be able to play before he arrives. A stable and clean program will assure him that when he walks out onto the field or court each game, he doesn't have to worry about the NCAA taking the ball away. Slocum has established a cred ible program and reinstilled in tegrity to his position. His no-nonsense philosophy has shown his players and the A&M community alike that he wants to lead the Aggies to the promised land with academically and socially stable athletes. Davis battled ineligibility and disciplinary problems through out his one-year tenure, keeping him from implementing the plans he thought would win games for the A&M basketball team. Now the athletic department must find a new basketball coach and instill confidence in its fu ture recruits that the team is on its way to bigger things. Good recruiting can happen for A&M b^ketball, it just takes time to put together the nec essary ingredients. r/^ANtTx ,-nie w elections '91 Voting for Student Body Elections will be held Wednesday, March 27 and I |TW Thursday, March 28 at Blocker, MSC Flagroom, Kleberg, and the Academic Building from 9a.m. to 6p.nn.
