The Texas A&M University Student Publications Board is accepting applications for Editor, The Battalion Summer Session 1991 Editor, The Battalion Fall 1991 Editor, Aggieland 1992 Editor/Producer, AggieVision 1991-92 Application forms are available in the Journalism Department office, room 230 Reed McDonald Building, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Completed forms must be submitted to Francia Eldridge, 230 Reed McDonald, by 1 p.m. Friday, April 5, 1991. Applicants will be interviewed during the Student Publications Board Meeting beginning at 2 p.m. Monday, April 8, 1991. Election changes listed Continued from page 1 Other candidates for junior yell leaders are Tim Isgitt, politi cal science; Danny Hinde, elec trical engineering; Rob Cody, ac- counting; Adin Pfeuffer, industrial distribution; Ronnie McDonald, political science; and Gray Schroeder, psychology. Another change on the ballot is that the number of elected po sitions has been reduced. The Student Senate passed a reap propriation bill in February re ducing the Senate population from 109 positions to 61. Kenny Gossett, speaker of the Senate, says they hoped reduc ing the Senate size will make the elections more competitive. "Hopefully, this will make the people elected appreciate their position when they get it," Gos sett says. Davis says, however, many of the elected postions on the ballot for senatorial seats are still unop- i posed. Other changes in elected post ions on the ballot include: □ The general student body will no longer elect the chairper sons for Student Government Academic Affairs, External Af fairs, Student Services and Fi nance committees. They will be chosen by a committee. □ Off-campus seats are no longer elected by wards, where senators would sign up for the area they lived in. There now are just 20 elected off-campus sen ator positions. □ On-campus senators will not represent individual halls. Instead, seven senators will rep resent northside dorm students and four senators will represent southside dorm students. The only referendum on the ballot — a campus cable TV pro posal — concerns on-campus students only. The proposal states that TCA cable will provide cable TV and FM service to all residence halls and dorm rooms on the campus. If approved by the student body. Business Services and the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, the proposal would become effective for the 1992-1993 school year. The proposed rate of $20 per resident per semester would au tomatically be added to every resident's rent with no installa tion fees and no additional charge for summer residents. Presently, 33-channel basic ca ble costs $19.43 a month with a $25 installation fee. More information on candi dates and the referendum will be featured Tuesday in a voter's guide in The Battalion. Madison Htfit ’5 THE PR.08LEM, Me£t> ; '/ouVf GOT MO GUTS Thornton: Education, athletics can go together Continued from page 1 and served as an assistant coacn for nine years. But Thornton also has been a standorit in the class room — he graduated cum laude in 1975 and has spent the last ear working on his Ph.D in igher education. "I'm happy with what I'm doing, but I think I may present a unique solution to this," he said. "I believe in academics and athletics, and I think the two can be one. People who know me know what I represent." Thornton stressed he's not campaigning for the job, but that he'a love nothing more than to stalk the sidelines of G. Rollie White Coliseum once again. "It's an opportunity to build a program based on the right things," he said. "There's a rea listic commitment to the estab lishment, of the continuance of integrity in athletics. I believe that. I really do. This will be the opportunity to go in there and base (the new coach's) program on the right things." Thornton has watched from a distance as A&M's basketball program soured in 1990. Kermit Davis Jr., in his first year as head coach, guided the Aggies to a disappointing 8-21 season. Davis resigned last Friday, and the threat of NCAA probation looms over the program. "Unless you've been there — yoLi might think you know, but you really don't know — and I really felt sorry for (Davis) being in that situation, as well as the players being in that situation," Thornton said. "It's a tough thing to go through. "I know the dilemma a coach is put in when there's so much unknown hanging over your head. I know how that feels. I don't want to dwell on the past. That is not something that is going to be changed. It's a differ ent situation now. I'm ready to go on in whatever direction." He hoped to have already had the job tnis year, but the Univer sity hired Davis at the end of last season. Thornton attended a few home games and saw his former players from time to time but spent most of this season con centrating on school. "Now I'm doing other things,” Thornton said. "But at times, ou walk by the gym, and you ear the bouncing ball. "It's that time of the year. It starts getting a little chilly. It all comes back to you. When you do something for that long, it tugs at your heart strings after a whi le." "One k more cons a news o week's lee political c potential : Continued from page 1 veteran's sense of loss," he says. This sense of loss is due be cause the soldiers have formed their own support group, and when they return, the family members want to smother them with love," he says. "Soldiers could draw away with emotion, and the family might think something was wrong," he says. "They can ex pect to see these soldiers start pulling back from their spouses. "I don't anticipate many psy chological problems except those who observed death," he says. "In Vietnam the soldiers came back and didn't have time to talk, but today the soldiers share with others and get things outof their systems," he says. "From a political and militan standpoint the war was ob viously successful, and this wil minimize problems with the re turning soldiers." Taste the best Froaen Yogurt in town.
