Crow made bad decision TANK MCNAMARA by Jeff Millar & Bill Hinds Continued from page 7 two years of Division I success in Idaho enough? And what big names did they beat to give Davis that kind of reputation? I questioned Crow's move long ago. But the big people, with the big paychecks and con stant media attention, get to make the big choices, even when they don't know what they're doing. Davis' only apparent ties to the inner-city were to Rob John son, an alleged player broker. Johnson is the type of guy that wears the NCAA's scarlet letter on his sweater. Why would Davis, knowing that Jackie Sherrill recently got caught in the football program, even associate with Johnson? Because Davis was young and naive? Maybe. Davis even considered John son for a graduate assistant posi tion on the Aggie team, although there is no record of him having graduated from anywhere. And Davis really blew the handling of the whole Tony Scott affair. The young coach got nervous when the transfer scan dal began to fall through the roof. His actions left room for spec ulation that he was scrambling to save his own hide, knowing he didn't want to go down in only his first season on the job. And will somebody please tell me why Scott would say he came to A&M for the new arena, among other things. Scott should be working for a Big 8 accounting firm by the time the arena is finished in 1993, shouldn't he? And let's not forget the season itself. The Aggies were 8-21, with "key" victories over Texas Col lege and Centenary. Beating Baylor and Tech snowed me little. Boy, Longhorns must be chuckling at this scenario. Discipline seems to be one of Davis' weak points. The players cracked like eggs under late- game defensive pressure mroughout the year. That is a coachmg problem. The only way nervous players break pressure is if they practice doing it con stantly. Nonetheless, the book is closed on a dismal season. And [another book, A&M's 95-page internal report, is headed to Kansas City for what should be an interesting review by NCAA investigators. Where does Davis take his teenage looks and hot reputation now? Ironically, Mississippi State could be a way out, and it would have nothing to do with the fact that the school was Sherrill's es cape hatch. Davis' father, Kermit Sr., is as sociate director of the Bulldog Club booster group and was head coach or the basketball team from 1970-77. But I'm sure the last word Da vis Jr. wants to hear is booster. I don't think anyone else is going to touch this hot potato for quite some time, and if someone aoes, may the force be with them. And if Davis can't find a job anytime soon, he can always guest host for Big Bird. Get the AI&T Calling Card and your first call is free. There’s no better time to speak your mind.
