When I took this job on, I only thought l would be here for a year or two.” If Lewis, D-Fort Worth, steps down after this term, it would clear the path for the first speaker’s raCe in nearly a decade. A House mem ber since 1971, Lewis has been speaker since 1983. A Travis County grand jury in dicted Lewis in December on two misdemeanor ethics charges. Lewis is accused of accepting a gift from a San Antonio law firm and failing to report it to the Texas Secretary of State, as state law requires. John Yeosock, 53, com mander of the 280,000 Army troops in Operation Desert Storm, was a squadron leader with the 3rd Ar mored Cavalry Regiment in 1973. Yeosock is currently commander of the 3rd Army and is the top Army boss under Gen. Norman Schwat*. kopf, leader of all U.S. forces in the war. Under Yeosock’s direction is one of the largest armored forces since World War II, including 2,300 M1A1 tanks and several thousand troop carriers and artillery pieces. “Yeosock is a good, tough man; don’t worry about him,” said James Polk, who once commanded the 3rd Cav. and went on to become com mander of U.S. forces in Europe. Polk retired as a four-star general and now lives in El Paso. Yeosock arrived at Fort Bliss a year after the 3rd Cav. transferred there from Fort Lewis, Wash.
