Bentsen Legislators want proof of promises WASHINGTON (AP) — Texas congressmen say they’re waiting to see proof of President Bush’s com mitment to a na- tional energy and in spending on science, space and technology. Although Tex ans say they wel come the presi dent’s support for a variety of is sues important to the state — in cluding the do mestic energy industry, alternative fuels and a free trade agreement with Mexico — they say they’re wait ing for the specifics. “The question is, is the budget going to be responsive to his com mitment and the rhetoric of the speech,” Rep. Kika de la Garza, D- Mission, said following the presi dent’s State of the Union address Tuesday night. “The commitment comes easy, the fulfillment will be the more difficult time.” Democratic Sen. Lloyd Bentsen said,“I won’t judge the president’s national energy strategy until he un veils it, but we’ve been promised an energy policy time and again over the past decade only to be let down each time.” Rep. Jim Ghapman, D-Sulphur Springs, criticized Bush for a speech that was “very short on substance and very light in its references to his domestic agenda. “The good points were his refer ences to our reasons for being in the gulf, the fact that we’re on high moral ground; but it is as though he just glossed over a world of domestic problems that we must deal with — health care, education, energy,” Chapman said. Some Republicans, however, praised the speech as “powerful and visionary.” “I thought the president’s vision was a very powerful vision, both in international affairs and in domestic policy,” Republican Sen. Phil Gramm said. “I am supportive of the president both in winning the war in the Mid dle East and in building lasting peace on the victory and in restruc turing the budget to release the gen ius in ordinary people.” Democrats and Republicans said Bush’s comments about U.S. actions in the Persian Gulf were “right on.” “As someone who represents 24,000 troops in the Persian Gulf, I was touched by the heartfelt ovation for the men and women serving our country in Saudi Arabia,” Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, said. Nerd House by Tom A.
