UNLV (l 3-0) received all 64 first- place votes and 1,600 points in bal loting by a nationwide panel of sports writers and broadcasters. The top four teams remained unchanged from last week, with Arkansas (17-1) No. 2, followed by Indiana (16-1) and Ohio State (15-0). UNLV beat Long Beach State M4-63 on Saturday but faced UC- Santa Barbara Monday night. Santa Barbara was the last team to beat the defending NCAA champions, 78-70 last season. “They’re probably waiting for us outside the gym now,” Runnin’ Re bels Coach Jerry Tarkanian said af ter the Long Beach State game. Arkansas received 1,518 points, Indiana 1,448 and Ohio State 1,434. No. 24 New Orleans (15-2) and No. 22 Michigan State (12-4) were the two newcomers to the poll. The last time New Orleans appeared in the poll was the final week of the 1986-87 season, at 16th. Michigan State was ranked as high as No. 4 in preseason but fell out of the poll three weeks ago. South Carolina 22 13-4 Wilson This is the first trip to the big dance for the Bills, whose no-huddle offense and stingy run defense made them virtually unstoppable and allowed them to squeak by the Giants in December, 17-13. Can they win the big one? Without a doubt. • They have a top gun, Jim Kelly, who comes from vaunted University of Miami line of tossers including Bernie Kosar, Vinnie Testaverde, Steve Walsh, and soon-to-be pro Craig Erickson. • They have one of the games great rushers, Thurman Thomas, who racked up 1,297 yards during the regular season. • Their receiving corps is out standing, with four players, includ ing dangerous Andre Reed and re juvenated James Lofton, catching over 400 yards worth of pigskin. • Kicker Scott Norwood racked up 110 points and Don Smith aver aged 20.1 yards on kick returns this season. • The Bills’ pride also lies in their defense. Just ask Odomes, Kelso, Talley, Smith, Seals, Bennett and Conlan. This is the second super trip for the Giants. Can they win the big one? Certainly. • Phil Simms is out, but Jeff Hos tetler beat two of the most effective defenses in the league with his poise, accuracy and mobility. He’s on a roll. • Ageless O.J. Anderson carries the bulk of the Giants’ punishing ground game in the absence of Rod ney Hampton, who is out with a bro ken leg. • Dave Meggett and Mark Ba- Continued from page 7 varo lead a balanced receiving attack that is as effective in the clutch as anybody’s. • Matt Bahr already showed the nation what he’s made of on Sunday when he kicked five field goals. • Taylor, Banks, Reasons, Walls, Collins, Marshall, and Howard are now household defensive surnames. With both teams possessing such solid defensive units, field position will become a deciding factor in this one. The Giants’ have Dave Megett, the league’s best punt/kickoff return man. The Bills counter with Don Smith, the AFC’s leading kickoff re turner. The Bills have arguably the best defense in the league, and it’s argua ble because the Giants may just have a better one. The Giants have the intangible that sportswriters love to mention, big-game experience. But Denver quarterback John Elway Super Bowl foldings have all but thrown that theory out of the back door. And, of course, the Giants must once agifiin co.n.tend with Jim Kelly’s no-huddle offense that squeaked by them in December. So man for man, this game stacks up really well, with the Bills’ advan tage obviously being at quarterback. But Jeff Hostetler has already shredded another great defense, the Chicago Bears, and beat possibly the greatest finesse quarterback of all time in the 49ers’Joe Montana. The Cowboys’ and 49ers fans’ will take the Bills, and so will the major sportswriters and oddsmakers, but as an unknown source once so elo quently put it, “On any given day...” Student Y wants U!
