Tyler lawyer takes oath as secretary AUSTIN (AP) — Tyler lawyer John Hannah was sworn in Thurs day as secretary of state, which — if Texas tradition holds — would make him Gov. Ann Richards’ right arm in state government. Richards, who appointed Hannah to the position, said, “He truly is the best that we could possibly have as secretary of state.” She said Hannah as a former leg islator, leader in ethics reform, pros ecuting attorney and U.S. attorney “brings to the office ... experience and intellect that are literally inval uable to this administration.” Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock said Han nah, who has been designated as the new administration’s point man on ethics reform, “has the opportunity to replace Stephen F. Austin as the best secretary of state in Texas (his tory).” Austin is generally recognized as the father of Texas. “The people of Texas today are crying out for election reform and for changes in our ethics laws,” Bul lock, a former secretary of state, said. Support Continued from page 1 families in doing what we could to help them,” he says. The group is dedicated to the families and is designed to let them know they are not alone. Prevatt says support groups are common in cities with large military installations because almost every one is in the same situation. He says local families of soldiers, however, might feel isolated and alone. Prevatt and volunteers working with the group are trying to provide the same services that families in a military community would receive. “We’re going to do what it takes to provide support for these families,” Prevatt says. The group probably will try to be come involved in some projects to get themselves working together, he says. These projects might include everything from “letter writing to ty ing yellow ribbons on utility poles.” But Prevatt says he is leaving the decisions up to members of the group. In addition to filling the need for emotional support, Prevatt says the group also is trying to help students recalled to active duty. “We don’t want any student that is recalled to active duty as a reservist to leave worried about how it’s going to affect their career here,” Prevatt says. He is working with A&M Regis trar Donald Carter to make sure these students are being helped. Although Prevatt welcomes help from A&M campus organizations, he stresses that group meetings mainly are a place where the families can come together and share feel ings. He says he already has been con tacted by several campus organiza tions willing to help. “I’ve been in the military for 25 years,” Prevatt says. “I know when someone is sitting in Saudi Arabia and they’re getting ready to go into war, the one thing they want to know is that people back home are behind them. “And w'e are going to make sure they know there’s a large segment of our population that stands behind them,” he says.
