Dallas airline receives expansion opportunity DALLAS (AP) - The sudden demise of Midway Airlines has given Southwest Airlines, the dis count carrier that is a darling of Wall Street as well as air travelers, its greatest expansion opportunity in years, analysts say. Southwest last week tentative ly picked up eight gates at Chica go's Midway Airport, the city's secondary airport and the kind the Dallas-based airline has used for 20 years to build itself into one of the nation's healthiest carriers. Added to the four gates where Southwest had been operating 44 daily flights, the airline is now perched to build a route system in Chicago that rivals its major cen ters in Dallas, Houston anc Phoenix, John Denison, execute vice president for Southwest, saii last week. That would mean more thar 110 daily flights. The airline wil announce the first expansions Midway within two weeks. "In that area east of the Missis sippi, it's pretty dense, more to it is in Dallas," said Rober Joedicke, airline analyst for Shear son Lehman Brothers Inc. in Nev York. "There's a terrific potential.' "They now will have a bigge: springboard than ever to increase their position there," said George James, president of Airline Eco nomics Inc. CHUCK'S BACK!!
