This semester has been filled with international plays, children’s drama, American pianists and one- man shows. But, just when you think you’ve seen all there is to see, watch out! The Brazos Valley Guitar So ciety will host its second concert of the season with jazz guitarist Gerald Blakeman titled “An Instrument of Today.” Blakeman is a graduate of the University of Houston in Music Composition and Theory. He has called Houston home for over 30 years and has played both classical and jazz guitar in different settings from night clubs to the Houston Symphony. The Brazos Valley Guitar Society began as a local amateur society committed to the art of guitar play ing. A group of interested guitarists sponsored an evening concert in 1986, thus forming the society. Since then, the group has organized and sponsored season series of concerts every year, several masters classes and informal meetings with guitar ists. Tom Frantz, a founding member, says that the interest of the members was sparked by a female guitarist, Sara Horsfall. “We get together on occasion and play the guitar. She is the one that has been the prime mover of this thing,” Frantz says. The remainder of their season will included performances by Stan ley Yates and Stephen Robinson. Yates is currently teaching guitar at the University of North Texas where HIGHLIGHTS /.
