Page 1 O Thursday, Novembers, 1990 Rookies of the Year Alomar catches AL attention NEW YORK (AP) — Sandy Alomar Jr., a prospect who turned promise into productiv ity, became only the third unani mous choice as rookie of the year, winning the American League award Wednesday. The Cleveland catcher joined Mark McGwire (1987) and Carl ton Fisk (1972) as the only major leaguers to sweep the honor since it was first presented 1947. Alomar, 24, hit .290 with nine homers and 66 RBIs and was the first rookie catcher ever to start an All-Star game. Alomar was a two-time minor league player of the year in the San Diego system, but was un able to break into the big leagues because the Padres already had All-Star catcher Benito Santiago. So last December, the Padres, who have Alomar’s father Sandy Sr. as a coach and brother Rob erto as a second baseman, traded him and two other players to the Indians for their best, player, slugger Joe Carter. Braves’ Justice choice for NL NEW YORK (AP) — Dave Justice, who began the season in the minors and blossomed into baseball’s best baby boomer, was the near-unanimous choice Tuesday as National League rookie of the year. Justice hit 28 homers for the Atlanta Braves, most of them af ter he took over in right field when Dale Murphy was traded in early August. Justice batted .282 with 78 RBIs in 127 games. Justice recieved 23 of 24 first- place votes for 118 points. Mon treal second baseman Delino De- Shields got the other first-place vote and had 60 points. Following in the voting were Cincinnati first baseman Hal Morris (13), San Francisco pitcher John Burkett (12), Cubs pitcher Mike Harkey (7), St. Louis catcher Todd Zeile (4) and Montreal outfielders Marquis Grissom (1) and Larry Walker (1). Two members of the Base ball Writers Association of America in each NL city voted. NIGHT-TIME HEARTBURN STUDY Do you experience night-time heartburn? (AP) — The Illi nois basketball team was banned from postseason play in 1991, placed on three years’ probation and lim ited to two new scholarships each of the next two years on Wednesday. And that’s after being cleared by the its campus the first year. It will also be limited to awarding just two bas ketball scholarships in each of the first two seasons of the probation. Television coverage, however, will not be restricted. Coach Lou Henson said he was ■■■THE UNIVERSITY OF ill illinniQ mim iihi ■Vriri^si NCAA of the worst charges: offer ing cash and cars to top recruits. “If the most serious violations had been found then I think from read ing the report the so-called death penalty ... would have been im posed,” said David Berst, the NCAA’s assistant executive director for enforcement. Such a penalty can be imposed af ter a school is sanctioned twice within a five-year period for major NCAA infractions. This is Illinois’ third penalty since 1984. “We disagree with several of the committee’s findings, and some of the sanctions are harsher than we expected,” Illinois chancellor Mor ton Weir said. Illinois will be banned from off- campus basketball recruiting and from paying for visits by recruits to disappointed that he could not award all five scholarships he had promised to high school recruits, but said he expected his current players would stay. “We’re not in shambles,” said Henson, now in his 16th season. “When we take the floor this year, our players will be more motivated and more inspired that perhaps ever before.” Weir said that the university’s own investigation turned up most of the violations, and that the school was determined to abide by NCAA rules. “We were disappointed with the fact that we found a number of mi nor violations,” athletic director John Mackovic said. “The manage ment of the program needs to be strengthened, and we have taken steps to accomplish that.” BETA THETA PI AGGIE COWBOYS present RIDE FOR LIFE EVENT: Join the Youth of Brazos County in the 1st Annual Ride For Life cycling tour.
