The Southwest Conference is rep resented by No. 3 Houston and No. 14 Texas. Houston, 8-0-0 and the only un beaten, untied team in Division I-A, is third with five first-place votes and 1,337 points. Texas, 6-1-0, remained at No. 14 with 782 points after a 41-22 whip ping of Texas Tech in Lubbock. Notre Dame’s rollercoaster ride in □ Associated Press Top 25 poll/Page 9 the rankings reached another peak when the Irish regained the top spot. Georgia Tech’s 41-38 victory over top-ranked Virginia helped the Irish move from No. 2 to No. 1, a position they held for four weeks before los ing to Stanford in early October. Notre Dame fell to eighth after that loss, but four straight victories and a series of upsets have allowed the Ir ish to reclaim No. 1. Notre Dame (7-1), which beat Navy 52-31 Saturday, received 37 first-place votes and 1,456 points from a nationwide panel of sports- writers and broadcasters. Washing ton (8-1) is second with 13 first-place votes and 1,403 points. Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz, who was unhappy with his team’s performance against Navy, said the Irish don’t deserve the No. 1 rank ing. ‘We aren’t the No. 1 team,” he said. “You can’t be a great team until you play great on defense, and we haven’t put that phase of our game together. “I’m not concerned about who’s No. 1 now or at any other time other than Jan. 2, and I think there are 10 or 15 teams that have a better chance of getting there than we do.” Holtz is known for poor-mouth ing his own team, but this time he may have a point. With games re maining against No. 9 Tennessee, No. 21 Penn State and No. 23 South ern Cal, the Irish may not hold onto the top spot for very long. “Any time Notre Dame is ranked No. 1, the students in Grace Hall put up a big No. 1 that lights up at night,” Holtz said. “They may decide it’s not worth the effort to put it up there this time, considering the chances of us being there for any |$Tbo $100: 00 100 Individu 00 m a thei ■ 00 c HUY THANH NGUYEN/The Battalioi' ^ qq ■ OQ $100 $K Anthony Williams (48) and A&M’s 38-17 win over SMU wasn't joo"$iOO~$T( enough to put the Aggies back into Monday’s AP Top 25 poll. ■ 00 vVantei Virginia and three other teamsiiiffl 00 an j nve last week’s Top 5 — Nebraska, An gd 00 length of time.” Washington was one spot below Houston at No. 7 in last week’s poll, but the Huskies moved ahead or the Cougars after routing Arizona 54- 10. Lady Ags lose Decree Senior Diane Decree, expected to play a key role for the Texas A&M women's basketball team, has decided to leave the Univer sity, coach Lynn Hickey said Monday. Decree cited personal reasons for her decisions, and University officials said she officially with drew from school passing. “We are very disappointed to see Diane leave,” Hickey said. “She has given a lot of herself to this program. Diane is a good person and we wish her the very best in the future. “This comes at a difficult time, but our younger players will have to step forward.” Decree started 21 games for the Lady Aggies last season and averaged 5,6 points and 6.0 re bounds a game. Browns give Carson axe after 42-0 shellacking rn $300 $31 PAUL BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleve land Browns, off to their worst start since 1984, fired coach Bud Carson the day after their worst home loss ever. Owner Art Modell, who promised last year that Carson would be his last head coach, changed his mind following Sunday’s 42-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills. “It was an embarrassment for all of us,” Modell said Monday. “If I ever do leave the game, I’m going to go out on top. I’m not going to go out as a loser.” Carson, the first coaching casualty of the season, was replaced by first- year offensive coordinator Jim Shofner. The Browns, who have made the playoffs the five past years, are 2-7 and off to their worst start since 1984, when their 1-7 record cost Sam Rutigliano his job. “I was hoping and praying th Bud would turn it around,” Mode said. “I can’t coach, but I have son instincts for the game. We had li stop the hemorrhaging. I’m look:', for a demonstrable turnaround ii performance.” Carson’s three-year contraci which runs through 1991, will k honored, Modell said. Carson had indicated Sundi' night that he might resign, but Is did not leave voluntarily, Model said. Carson said Monday he hat thought the Browns were bad oi track when they lost to the San Fran cisco 49ers 20-17 on a last-minus field goal a week ago. “We expected to play well la: night and we did not do it,” Carso: said.
