A succession of witnesses called by the de fendants spoke against McCorvey, 34, in her $11 million lawsuit against the diocese. McCorvey claims she was raped and brutalized for nearly two years by the Rev. Fernando Noe Guzman, 39. McCorvey contends church officials knew Guzman had a history of sexual miscon duct and failed to intervene. Church officials maintain McCorvey and Guz man began a consensual affair at Our Lady of Fa tima Church. Houston psychiatrist James Claghorn, testify ing Tuesday, disputed McCorvey’s statement that she was unable to resist Guzman’s sexual ad vances because of her belief that priests were in fallible. Instead, Claghorn described McCorvey, whom he examined for the trial, as someone who used sex to get what she wanted. He described her as “manipulative” and ingratiating. McCorvey maintains she was trapped and iso lated in her relationship with Guzman. Claghorn testified McCorvey could have ended the relationship if she wanted to do it. Church volunteer Peggy Diese also depicted McCorvey as manipulative. A parish member since 1969, Diese described McCorvey as difficult to get along with. “I got the impression that she enjoyed the power, the decision making,” Diese said.
