Genetically altered cotton plant proves pest-proof; future use of caterpillar insecticides to change preying on a new genetically altered cotton plant will be ea^Jng their last meal. Tests this summer in Texas, Mis sissippi, Arizona and California showed that the caterpillars died of ten after eating only a bite or two of the leaves or bolls of the altered cot ton. Because of such deaths, these plants were almost as damage-free as unaltered cotton nearby that had been sprayed several times with in secticide. The altered plants had been tested successfully in greenhouses, but scientists were unsure that the tactic would work under field condi tions. Unfortunately, the tactic has no effect on the boll weevil, a com pletely different kind of insect. “If the new technology passes all its tests it could practically eliminate insecticide sprays for caterpillar pests in cotton,” said David Altman of the Agricultural Research Serv ice’s Southern Crops Research Labo ratory in College Station. The Texas fields were near Col lege Station, in the Brazos River bot tomlands, and near Lubbock in the Panhandle."' The plants were developed by the Monsanto Co. and tested by the Ag ricultural Research Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The technical label for the plants is transgenic because scientists at Mon santo inserted a gene from a com mercially available bacteria known as Bacillus thuringiensis. The bacteria manufacture a pro tein toxic to many caterpillars and widely used in sprays by organic gar deners and some commercial farm ers. The new plants manufacture the protein, a big advantage over sprays, which wash off and deteriorate. “The results were spectacular,” said Monsanto spokeswoman Lisa Drake at company headquarters in St. Louis. Killed were caterpillars of several lepidopteran moths, including the tobacco budworm, cotton bollworm, pink bollworm and beet armyworm. Candidate questions use of TV clip in ad AUSTIN (AP) — The candidates for chief justice of the Texas Su preme Court are at odds over a tele vision commercial being aired by in cumbent GOP Chief Justice Tom Phillips. The ad includes a film clip from a CBS-TV “60 Minutes” program on the Texas court that was titled “Jus tice for Sale?” Phillips’ opponent. Democratic Justice Oscar Mauzy, on Thursday made public a letter from CBS in which the network said the program was copyrighted and that CBS “does not authorize the use of its broad casts, in whole or in part, for any partisan political purpose.” Mauzy said Phillips should stop broadcasting the ad. Phillips’ cam paign manager, Pat Berry, said she and Phillips saw no need to do so. “In order to safeguard First Amendment values, federal copy right laws permit all persons to make fair use of copyrighted material,” Berry said. “Expert legal counsel, knowledge able of copyright law, advised the campaign that its use of excerpts from ‘Justice for Sale?’ fully com plied with copyright regulations,” she said. Mauzy said the Phillips’ ad un fairly implies that he was the target of the CBS program and released a statement from a CBS producer say ing Mauzy appeared to discuss his support of continued judicial elec tions. “It is ironic,” Mauzy said, “that Justice Phillips, who has based his campaign on his integrity, would al low such distortions to appear in his advertising — not once but twice now.” Phillips also used a CBS clip in his 1988 campaign. -and We Believe in Innovative Thinking.
