When stopped by a police offi cer for a traffic violation, safety is very important. Traffic laws must be enforced on campus, and offi cers are concerned for your safety as well as theirs. The following points will help you understand how to respond if a police officer signals you to stop your vehicle. • If the officer asks you to produce a driver’s license and proof of insurance, you must do so. If you don’t agree with the reason you were stopped, the street is not the place to argue your case. If you feel you are in nocent, carry your protest to court. • Whether you believe you are guilty of anything, you must com ply with the officer’s request. Look for a safe place to stop and signal your intent. If at all possi ble, don’t stop in a traffic lane. • Keep your hands visible when the officer approaches. The officer will tell you why you were stopped. Don’t make any sudden moves to reach in an area not visi ble to officers. Officers also la a legitimate concern for the safety. • Stay in the car unless 4 retted otherwise. Never open door or step out into a traffi lane. If the officer requests you# your passengers to get outofave hide, follow the officers instrui lions. • The officer may ask yot ? |uestions concerning a traffic b faction before deciding what do. The officer does not havet warn you of your rights in trail; situations. • In most cases, the officer % ask you to sign a ticket rathe than arrest you. Your signature not a plea of guilty, it’s just you promise to make disposition the ticket to a justice of the peace court judge or jury. 4 • Be careful when re-enteri: traffic. Don’t assume vehicles w give you the right of way as v« leave. Drive defensively. Receiving a traffic ticket, al though unpleasant, should nmio itself be a cause for complain!. The officers are merely doim their jobs by trying to make the streets safe for you, your friend; and family.
