UT paper’s coverage sparks feud AUSTIN (AP) — Controvert over gay rights coverage in the stu dent newspaper has renewed fric tion between some University Texas students and the administra tion. The Daily Texans’ reporting of a gay and lesbian rally this week sparked outrage among some pro fessors and students, but the papers editor said Saturday he stands by the paper’s treatment of the event. Everyone Welcome! Wed., Sept. 5 ^ ^ 7:30 p.m. 1 268 Read The front-page story contained explicit language describing homo sexual sex and was accompanied by a photograph showing gay and lesbian couples kissing. “Some of the things that we repori on are going to be shocking, but if it’s newsworthy we are going to re port on it,” Kevin McHargue, editor of the 50,000-circulation paper, said. Gale Wiley, who teaches journa lism at UT, said the paper’s coverage was sensationalistic and self-serving. “What we have is a group of kids trying to call attention to them selves,” he said. The issue also contained a letter to the editor from the speaker, who had complained he was misquoted because the Daily Texan had paraphrased him. The letter contained his exact quotes, which were more explicit. H«rm McHargue said it is the Texan’s policy to run corrections of front page stories on the front page. “The quotes were wrong and we had to correct the quotes,” he said. Martin “Red” Gibson, a journa lism professor, said he fears the Texan was used by an outspoken mi nority. “There is always a danger when someone starts using the press for their own purposes — left-wing, right-wing, straight or gay,” Gibson ol< told the Austin American-States- man. Gibson serves on a board that oversees the paper’s business opera tions but has no control over con tent. The Texan makes 95 percent of its $2.2 million budget from ad vertising and 5 percent, or $ 150,000. from student fees.
