Fraternity sponsors event to help severely handicapped Houston reports Summit expense to be $2.07 M HOUSTON (AP) — Preliminary reports show Houston spent at least $2.07 million to spruce up the city and provide security for 7,000 visi tors for the International Economic Summit last month. The Police Department spent S1.97 million to provide security, which could have cost another $589,800 in overtime but some offi cers opted for compensatory time. The Fire Department spent $54,200. Pi Kappa Phi fraternity members are sponsoring a scaffolding sit at the Academic Plaza, between the Academic Building and Sterling C. Evans Library, to benefit People Un derstanding the Severely Hand icapped. The sit began Sunday at 6 p.m. and will continue through Friday at 9:50 a.m. The PUSH program was founded in 1977 as a private, non-profit orga nization. Nationwide Pi Kappa Phi chapters have since raised more than $1 mil lion for PUSH. University Plus provides educational alternatives By ISSELLE MCALLISTER Of The Battalion Staff The possibility of a grade-point ratio drop might keep many students from enrolling in classes just for fun, but not every class at Texas A&M is completed for a grade. University Plus offers more than 120 non-credit eve ning leisure classes for students, faculty and community members, said Dana Williamson, program coordinator. “There are no exams, grades or degrees,” she said. The classes are diverse, she said, to accommodate a variety of interests of the 3,200 to 3,500 students who enroll each year. Classes offered include bellydancing, first aid, cake decorating, photography, auto mechanics, business and foreign languages. Most classes meet on campus, but classes such as the jitterbug and country western dance have so many at tendees that they must meet at Jazzercize and the Texas Hall of Fame. The aerobics and dance classes are most popular with students, she said, with the business and foreign lan guage classes following close behind. University Plus welcomes new course ideas. William son said anywhere from five to 10 new classes are added every semester from students’ suggestions. The classes last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the skills being learned, and the instructors are as diverse as the classes, she said. Professors, community members and even students can teach. All that is required is a general knowledge and interest in the subject. Registration begins at noon Monday at the University Plus office and craft shop in the basement of the MSG for all classes except aerobics. Registration for aerobics began Monday. Local groups honor Vaughan By JOHN RIGHTER Of The Battalion Staff Local groups the Kerouacs, the Killtones and Thunderin' T are per forming tonight at Mama’s Pizza in a tribute to Texas blues guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan. Vaughan, a two-time Grammy winner, died in a helicopter crash with four others early Monday after leaving a concert in Wisconsin. He was 35. The tribute is scheduled as part of the weekly Lippman Jam, an open showcase sponsored by Lippman Music for area musicians. Brian Lippman, owner of Lip pman Music, says the groups mostly will perform songs from Vaughan’s four albums on Epic Records. Lippman says the groups also will play popular covers Vaughan per formed live, as well as songs from artists that influenced Vaughan’s distinctive heavy Texas-blues style. The Vaughan tribute is scheduled to begin around 11 p.m., after regu lar sets of the Lippman Jam, which begins at 9:30 p.m. Vaughan, an instigator of the “Austin blues syndicate,” the blues explosion that brought national no toriety to Austin for its dearth of Texan salsa-blues and traditional blues groups, was a mainstay of the Texas club circuit for many years, even performing in College Station at the now-defunct Miranda’s at Northgate and TJ’s and Black Cat on Texas Avenue. Performing with several groups in the ’70s and early ’80s, including Paul Ray and the Cobras and Triple Threat, Vaughan made his big breakthrough with Double Trouble, the hand he had fronted since 1981. In 1982, Double Trouble signed a major-label contract with Epic Re cords — setting the precedent for Texas blues. Vaughan and Double Trouble released the classic Texas Flood the following year. In 1984, Vaughan and Double Trouble released the platinum-sell ing Can’t Stand The Weather. That same year the group was awarded the first of two Grammys for the song “Texas Flood.” Double Trouble followed Can’t Stand The Weather with 1985’s Soul To Soul. While touring in support of Soul To Soul, Vaughan and Double Trouble bass player Tommy Shan non checked into a drug rehabilita tion center in Georgia. It was four- years later before Double Trouble released the follow-up, In Step. With In Step, Vaughan quickly re established himself as the leader in contemporary blues. In Step gar nered industry-wide critical acclaim for Vaughan’s cleared vision and gutsy riffs, later earning Double Trouble its second Grammy. Vaughan celebrated his sobriety (four years) and comeback the past two years with a string of tours, in cluding co-headline stints with Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton. Lippman says the groups per forming in tonight’s tribute recog nize the tragedy of Vaughan’s death, a true Texas guitar hero who in fluenced all three bands. Mama’s Pizza is at 1037 S. Texas Ave. As always,'tonight’s jam is free.
