Birth of a Cadet JTarading their new military skills on Gen. Ormond R. Simpson Drill Field, freshman members of the Corps of Cadets marked the end of their orientation week and the beginning of the school year during Fish Review Friday, FOW Commander Conrado Alvarado praised the cadets for meeting all of the goals of Freshman Orientation Week in a short motivational address, and Maj. Gen. Thomas G. Darling administered the Corps of Cadets oath, which the freshmen repeated in unison. Besides teaching the fundamentals of marching and drills, Freshman Orientation Week helps the new cadets deal with the “culture shock” they experience in making the transition from civilian to military life, said FOW Commander Conrado Alvarado. This week is the hardest week of the year, he explained. The freshmen have activities planned from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Corps loses the most cadets during this week, he said, but this year they retained over 95% of their recruits. Corps Cmdr. Jonathan Whittles said “the hardest thing about Freshman Orientation Week is that you don’t run your own life anymore.” They must learn how to be led before they can learn how to lead, he said.
