It’s really not that big a deal.” —Spike Dykes, Texas Tech head coach field, “will be together” whether they remain in the SWC or move on. The Cotton Bowl executive com mittee held a meeting to discuss op tions. The Cotton Bowl traditionally has reserved an automatic bid for the SWC champion. Jim Brock, executive vice-presi dent of the Cotton Bowl, acknowl edged that Arkansas’ leaving “could have a big impact on us.” CBS-TV is looking into its options after Arkansas ended its 76-year af filiation with the SWC beginning in the 1991 season. “We could go one of three ways,” Brock said. “We could realign with another conference, stay where we are or go independent.” Should the Cotton Bowl follow an independent course, it would be in the same position as the Fiesta Bowl, which has no conference ties. “There are certain advantages be ing independent,” Brock said. “We hate to see Arkansas go but we’ve en joyed our association with the SWC. Maybe things will get better. We’ll just have to see. We don’t want to rush into anything.” The Cotton Bowl has been affil iated with the SWC for 50 years. “As long as Texas and A&M stay in the league it will be a strong con ference,” said Cotton Bowl president John Stuart. “The addition of an other strong member would also help the situation.” CBS Sports and the SWC have a six-year agreement. However, CBS has said it could lower rights fees with Arkansas gone from the confer ence. There was a “good riddance” atti tude from some SWC officials and coaches about Arkansas leaving. “Who cares?” asked Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes. “Good luck to ’em but we don’t want anyone in this conference who doesn’t want to be here. Don’t let the door hit ’em on the way out.” Houston athletic director Rudy Davalos said, “I’m glad the game playing is over. We’ll survive. ” Baylor’s Grant Teaff, the dean of SWC coaches beginning his 19th sea son, said, “Who is the SEC anyway? I just know we’ve got a unique situa tion, it’s special and good. We’ve paid the price for it, and we’ve had enough abuse. We’re not going to take it. We’ll come out slugging if we get any more.” SMU head football coach and ath letic director Forrest Gregg said Ar kansas’ leaving “isn’t like losing oxy gen or water. We’ll live.” SMU has been contemplating moving some of its games back to Texas Stadium for bigger gates. Ownby Stadium only seats 25,000. A&M coach R.C. Slocum said, “It might make it harder for A&M to leave than Arkansas because what would happen to the rest of the con ference because of our decision may be crucial.” Slocum added, “It’s not the end of the world and it’s not a panic situa tion for the rest of us.” Texas coach David McWilliams said he thought it was sad to see the Hogs go. Herzog fired, Torre hired, Cards march on ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joe Torre was hired Wednesday to replace first managerial job since 1984. “Surprise, surprise,” Cardinals general manager Dal Maxvill said at a news conference to announce that Torre signed a two-year con tract with an option for a third year. His salary was not disclosed. “During the selection process, I interviewed a number of very good candidates,” Maxvill said. “But I kept coming back to Joe Torre- “We couldn’t find anyone bet ter on earth.” The 50-year-old Torre will be in the dugout for Thursday’s game at FhUadelphia. He hasn’t managed since being fired by the Atlanta Braves in 1984, ana has been working as a broadcaster for the California Angels. “When you leave the booth af ter the game you’re never sure if you won or lost,” Torre said. "No- oody calls you at 2 a.m. and you don’t have to read in the papers how dumb you are. But winning is the greatest feeling in the world and losing with a chance to win is the next-best thing.” Torre said he will retain his coaching staff for the rest of the year and will use the time to eval uate the team, which was 13-10 under interim manager Red Schoendienst before Wednes day’s game against the Phillies. Herzog, who had been in his 11th year with the team, resigned July o. Torre was one of seven fi nalists for the job, but he always stood at the front of the pack as far as Maxvill, a longtime friend, was concerned. (AP) — Blacks golfers Lee Elder and Charlie Owens accused Shoal Creek country club of tokenism Wednesday for ad mitting an honorary black member to avoid protests at next week’s PGA Championship. Elder and Owens also criticized civil rights groups for calling off their plans to protest at the pre viously all-white club in Birming ham, Ala., when it hosts the tourna ment. “You need a tub of water and you get a teardrop and you’re satisfied,” Owens said. “No, it didn’t go far enough.” After Shoal Creek announced Tuesday that it was admitting Bir mingham businessman Louis Willie as a honorary member, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference canceled plans to demonstrate dur ing the event, which starts next Thursday. The NAACP also said it would ad vise its members not to protest at the event. “I felt that we should go to the very end with this thing,” Elder said at a tournament in Charlotte. “An honorary membership doesn’t mean anything.” “We get one guy in there and ev erything’s going to be lovey-dovey,” Owens said. “I don’t think they went far enough.” However, SCLC president Joseph Lowery said Shoal Creek’s accep tance of a black member is “an excel lent beginning.” “We didn’t get everything we would like, but compromise is a part of negotiations,” Lowery said. “We hope it’s the beginning of the end of racial exclusion in golf as a sport and in golf as a business.” Kyle Field!
