Official says construction
scrambles bus scheduling
By MELINDA COX
Special to the Battalion
The recent escalation of construc
tion on campus has wreaked havoc
with the scheduling of the inner-
campus buses and the ability to pro
vide efficient bus service to students,
Texas A&M Bus Operations officials
said.
“Campus construction is a night
mare,” Robert Hook, a dispatcher
for Bus Operations, said.
“The construction messes up the
schedules and it is maddening to not
be able to get the service you know
you can.”
Due to the construction, Hook
said, bus schedules have been kept
very flexible.
Cheryl Mize, assistant manager of
Bus Operations, said the construc
tion has meant that bus schedules
need to be reviewed constantly.
“We have to manipulate -the
schedule and maintain interaction
between the dispatcher and the bus
driver,” Mize said.
If buses are more than three min
utes behind the schedule, the bus
drivers are required to call the dis
patch office and receive directions to
correct the problem, she said.
Buses are staggered so there are
not three or four buses in a row, she
said, but it is hard to maintain that
spacing with the construction.
Little notification is given for
street closures and other changes
caused by the construction, Mize
said.
As soon as Bus Operations is noti
fied, however, signs are put up to
alert students to changes, she said.
“Unfortunately, construction
workers seem more interested in
reaching deadlines than helping our
services,” Mize said.
A&M runs 15 inner-campus buses
from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. To accommo
date the construction, the both
Howdy and Rudder buses are run
ning clockwise and counter-clock-,,
wise. These two routes are the ones
most affected by construction, Mize
said.
Bus driver Marianna Massey said
the construction has caused her job
to be more difficult, but Mize said
the drivers cope well with the con
struction.
Students also are confused about
the construction and its effect on
buses but they generally are under
standing, Mize said.
Students who wish to express
complaints about the bus system are
encouraged to call Bus Operations at
845-1971.
Bus Operations reviews the com
ments, Mize said, and sends callers
cards expressing apologies.
Seniors bid farewell to college
Ring Dance tickets go on sale
By STACY E. ALLEN
Of The Battalion Staff
Seniors can look forward to a weekend full of activity
and fun as they bid formal farewells to college life.
Katherine Smith, a senior political science major and
Class of ’90 president, said seniors can dance the night
away at the Texas Hall of Fame on April 27 to kick off
senior weekend. Tickets can be purchased Friday at the
Hall of Fame for $5.
On April 28, the senior banquet will be at University
Tower. Smith said the cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m.
and the dinner and speaker begin at approximately
7:00 p.m.
The speaker. Smith said, will be Dr. Sylvia Fernan
dez, who recruits minority students in the San Antonio
area for A&M. She also is the wife of Board of Regent
member Raul Fernandez.
Tickets for the banquet are $35 per couple.
Ring Dance follows the banquet from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
in the Rudder/Memorial Student Complex for $40 per
couple. The Buddy Brock Orchestra will perform in
Ruader Theatre and “The Change,” a rock and coun
try band, will perform on the second floor of the MSC.
Smith said pictures for Ring Dance will be taken in
Rudder Theatre from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on April 28.
She encourages students to get their pictures taken
early to avoid long lines.
Tickets for the events go on sale today at the Rudder
Box Office. A combination ticket for both the banquet
and ring dance will be on sale for $65.
Smith said the Class of ’90 also will have a promotio
nal table set up in the MSC today through April 27 so
students can pre-order Ring Dance pictures or buy se
nior weekend T-shirts.
“We are trying to encourage this to be a weekend
event,” Smith said. “We encourage people to attend the
banquet and dance because everybody has worked hard
on it and it should be really great.”
