The Battalion STATE & LOCAL Monday, April 9,1990 Official says construction scrambles bus scheduling By MELINDA COX Special to the Battalion The recent escalation of construc tion on campus has wreaked havoc with the scheduling of the inner- campus buses and the ability to pro vide efficient bus service to students, Texas A&M Bus Operations officials said. “Campus construction is a night mare,” Robert Hook, a dispatcher for Bus Operations, said. “The construction messes up the schedules and it is maddening to not be able to get the service you know you can.” Due to the construction, Hook said, bus schedules have been kept very flexible. Cheryl Mize, assistant manager of Bus Operations, said the construc tion has meant that bus schedules need to be reviewed constantly. “We have to manipulate -the schedule and maintain interaction between the dispatcher and the bus driver,” Mize said. If buses are more than three min utes behind the schedule, the bus drivers are required to call the dis patch office and receive directions to correct the problem, she said. Buses are staggered so there are not three or four buses in a row, she said, but it is hard to maintain that spacing with the construction. Little notification is given for street closures and other changes caused by the construction, Mize said. As soon as Bus Operations is noti fied, however, signs are put up to alert students to changes, she said. “Unfortunately, construction workers seem more interested in reaching deadlines than helping our services,” Mize said. A&M runs 15 inner-campus buses from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. To accommo date the construction, the both Howdy and Rudder buses are run ning clockwise and counter-clock-,, wise. These two routes are the ones most affected by construction, Mize said. Bus driver Marianna Massey said the construction has caused her job to be more difficult, but Mize said the drivers cope well with the con struction. Students also are confused about the construction and its effect on buses but they generally are under standing, Mize said. Students who wish to express complaints about the bus system are encouraged to call Bus Operations at 845-1971. Bus Operations reviews the com ments, Mize said, and sends callers cards expressing apologies. Seniors bid farewell to college Ring Dance tickets go on sale By STACY E.
