Firefighters struggled to reach cabins where victims burned to death or suffocated in the suspicious blaze, which began before dawn Saturday while the ship was in the North Sea carrying about 500 tourists and crew members on an overnight trip from Norway to Den mark. The heat was so intense Sunday that it melted alumi num aboard the bridge of the Danish-owned ship. Fire fighters in masks and breathing equipment fought through one corridor “until their gear started to burn,” fire consultant Olle Wennstrom said. One firefighter was slightly injured, he said. Firefighters were seen leaving the ship in tears. Each team underwent psychological care after being re lieved, officials said. The fire spread early Sunday from the gutted middle section to the captain’s bridge a few hours after the blackened ship was towed into port. Officials with VR-DANO Line, the company in Co penhagen that owns and operates the Bahamian- flagged ship, say the blaze was arson-caused, citing two deck. Most victims were asphyxiated but some wtn charred beyond recognition. Onso confirmed reports that two fires broke on aboard the Scandinavian Star, but he refused tospect wne blaze started in a pile of sheets outside a cabin on the car deck but was smothered by passengers. A second fire started minutes later in a cabin one deck above the car deck, and it was apparently this blaze that turned the ship into a floating deathtrap.” — Roar Onso, district police chie it STUDENT MUST SELL, Silver - Gorham - Strasburg Pattern, 12p + all serving pieces with chest. District Police Chief Roar Onso, revising earlier fig ures, said 345 people survived the fire on the ship that was headed from Oslo to Frederikshavn. Ferry captain Hugo Larsen told police of 395 passengers and 98 crewmen. If his figure is correct, 148 people died, Osno said. Firefighters found corpses in the corridors and cab ins. A few drivers were found in their trucks on the car late on how that fitted with claims that the firewasde liberately set. One blaze started in a pile of sheets outside a a on the car deck but was smothered by passengers said. A second fire started minutes later in acabinont deck above the car deck, and it was apparently thisblait that turned the ship into a floating deathtrap. Onso said it would take several days to begin an on site investigation of possible arson. The first bodies emerged from the ship in metalcon tainers, and officials said they would be sent in truckstn Oslo for identification. A memorial service was planned in Oslo’s main cathedral on Tuesday for the Nome gians, who comprised most of the casualties. Fifty-two survivors who were picked up by a Soviet freighter from lifeboats were kept in isolation undei the care of psychiatrists in Lysekil, 45 miles north of Goteborg. Relatives of the casualties began reaching the townoi 8,000 people, and also were assisted by teams ofpsychi atrtsts and nurses. The blaze sent plumes of smoke over Lysekil, Sweden’s southwest coast 250 miles southwest ofStod holm, the capital on the east coast. Onso said a burned passenger list was found in the debris but did not tally with the captain’s account, its accuracy was unclear. ‘ Student (Continued from page 1) difficult time as an international stu dent at A&M. “When people have a different skin color, they are automatically ste reotyped with a set of expected be haviors,” Burke said. She said another group of stu dents who are often forgotten or misunderstood is the population liv ing in the on-campus University- owned Apartments, which formerly was called Married Student Hous ing. The name was changed a few years ago when there were not enough married students to fill the apartments and A&M decided to al low graduate students and married students to live in the complex. She said that because the graduate student population at A&M is grow ing quickly, she made a request for A&M to build more graduate and married student apartments. How ever, she said, the University turned down her request because they did not want to give the impression to the community of being in the apart ment business. “What’s the difference between an apartment complex and a dormito ry?” Burke asked. Burke said there is a waiting list of 700 people who want to live in the University-owned Apartment com plex’s 651 units. She said most peo ple have to wait a year for an apart ment in the complex. “If the University wants to atw graduate students with gi search qualifications, one of the tractions would be adequate housin; for this population,” Burke said. She said the Married Studesi Apartment Council is in chargee! making others aware of the needst the residents in University-ownti Apartments. The Married Stud« Council has a representative voice: Student Government and sponst social activities for residents their families. “The residents of Universitj owned Apartments are probablyi hardest population to get outandso cialize," Burke said. She said most residents are busy with schoolwork and like spend their free time with their fam ifies.
