D uKEl the Duke oFDEAW S. Africa (Continued from page 1) ist incorrectly and that it was the South African people who forced him to relax and repeal some laws. He said the government scrapped the mixed marriage law and immo rality law which prohibited sex be tween two races, even though the government still does not allow members of two races, even married interracial couples, to live together. Coapoge said the people of the country forced the repeal of the law which segregated beaches and the law prohibiting marching in the streets. De Klerk also released black na tionalist Nelson Mandela earlier this year and legalized black political parties such as the ANC. “It is the people that have forced de Klerk’s hand,” he said. “It is the people who have forced him to back off the confrontations.” In response to a question after his speech, Coapoge said the ANC will not negotiate fully with the de Klerk government until more laws are re pealed, especially the race classifica tion act and the group areas act, which segregates nationalities. “We want these laws to come off Oupport the democratic movement of South Africa.” — Shaping Coapoge, U.N. observer for ANC the books, then we can start negotia ting,” he said. “We want the disman tling of apartheid.” Coapoge said another major point of contention between the ANC and de Klerk’s government is the one- man, one-vote idea versus a group rights type of government. “He (de Klerk) isn’t talking about scrapping apartheid,” he said. “We Media (Continued from page 1) and politics rather than their short comings.” Griffin said the media has the greatest influence on those who are not informed enough and enhances what people do know. “The media just reinforces opin ions already formed by the public,” Griffin said. The media uses the same issues again and again, she said. In such a “control-type” situation the media can influence what is important to the attentive public, Griffin said. “Priming” is the term for chang ing not only the priorities of the public, but how it evaluates the en tire political system, Griffin said. The panelists agreed that possibly the most important method of deter mining whether the media or public is dominant is the use of polls and surveys. But polls and surveys can some times be inaccurate and, Shafer said, the American public could possibly be suffering from “fatigue factor,” or rather, they’re tired of filling out surveys. Walraven agreed there are under lying circumstances to how surveys and polls are taken. “I think it’s very important to con tinually question the reliability of surveys and public opinion polls for their validity,” Walraven said. Research by surveys and polls af fects the media’s aim in that commu nity, Shafer said, and the media must adjust to fit that area. want a one-person, one-vote system We’re talking about majority rule. He’s talking about group rights.’’ Under a group rights system Coapoge said each racial group would have veto power over any ptr litical decision. He said this would still allow whites to dominate the po litical system. Coapoge said he urges the United States and the world community lo continue its political and econoni sanctions against South Africa undl apartheid is abolished. “Support the democratii movement of South Africa,” he said “Give whatever help you can, k please make sure the governmentoi the U.S. and Western Europe doni back off from their sanctions. 1 need the support.” Sorority (Continued from page 3) and also pay the $25 activation fer which makes them life members. Members pay dues every semester before becoming an active member. She said more members are wel come, but anyone interested has to be interviewed and meet the require ments of service work. “We also try to make it interesting for the members such as having dale parties, mixers and a semi-formal, but we are primarily service orien ted,” she said. “We feel as a sorority that we are big enough to make a difference but small enough to know everyone in the sorority,” she said. “We pride ourselves on knowing everyone.” Scully said members include a va riety of women and they do not dis criminate against anyone interested in joining. Questions about the Omega Phi Alpha sorority can be directed to the Student Programs Office at 845- 1515.
