Ric Williamson, vice chairman of the House’s budget writing Appropriations Committee and a member of its tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. “I doubt that there are many members of the Legislature that aren’t under some pressure to re duce property taxes back home,” said Williamson, D-Weatherford. But he said he couldn’t predict what state tax might be increased, if more money is needed for schools. In the first week of a second spe cial session on school finance re form, the House recessed until Mon day, when it will debate a bill to send $450 million more in state money to schools in 1990-91. If the House passes a school fi nance bill, it can be sent to a confer ence committee to work out differ ences with a $1.2 billion Senate plan. Lewis, D-Fort Worth, met with lawmakers to try to win votes for the House measure and to work on an alternate plan to be offered if the legislation fails. The $13.5 billion-a-year system relies on a combination of local property taxes, state aid and some federal money.
