Cape Hon ealand anil i UNLV’s win was no mere game, it was a clinic It was the red team against the blue team. It was the men against the boys. It wits a clinic on how to play the game of basketball. For those of you who watched the NCAA Championship game Monday night, you know what I’m talking about. The Runnin’ Rebs of UNLV demolished a scared and nervous Duke team by a record setting score of 103-73 The Blue Devils looked like a bunch ot skittish schoolgirls who didn’t come close to playing up to their potential. UNLV took the lead from the start and never looked back. Their tough defense smothered Duke like a mushy peanut butter and jelly sandwich that was sat on by a cow. The Rebels’ taunting man-to man defense proved to be effective once again, as the Blue Devils could not penetrate the wall of quick hands and white jerseys. And how about UNLV’s offensive attack? The Runnin’ Rebs should have been called the Flyin’ Rebs Monday night as they put on a dunk contest in the first half, with Jordan lookalikes showing See Snyder/Page 10 win By RICHARD TIJERINA Of The Battalion Staff Four Texas A&M pitchers combined on four-hitter in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over Sam Houston State at Olsen Field, giving the Aggies a small dose of revenge for their 4-3 loss to the Bearkats March 7. The win, which improved A&M’s record to 32-9, also gave the Aggies a much needed breath of confidence after last weekend’s series loss to Baylor, especially with surprising Rice coming to visit in three days. But great pitching has come to be ex pected of A&M. What was a welcome sur prise to Coach Mark Johnson was the sud den reappearance of the long ball at Olsen Field. Three different Aggies hit home runs — knocking in four of A&M’s five runs. We haven’t had the longball a lot this year, so when we have three in one night, we have something to celebrate,” Johnson said. ‘That’s not really our forte, and that’s not going to carry us in a lot of games, but it helped the guys’ confidence.” A&M looked sharp on both the mound and at the plate. Johnson said he wanted to see four pitchers, and that’s what he got, Starter Jason Bullard went three innings and didn’t give up a hit. Sean Lawrence came in at the top of the fourth inning, and stayed in until Brent Gilbert relieved him in the sixth. Gilbert gave up the first Bearkat run in the seventh. Gene Kridler hit a double, and scored on Clint Turlington’s single to right field, junior reliever Steve Hughes pitched the ninth inning. “It’s tough to get your rhythm in a ball- game where you have four pitchers throw ing, and it’s tough defensively to stay in that same rhythm.” The Aggies had two errors, but their eight-hit performance was more than enough to cover them up. Third baseman Travis Williams scored A&M’s first run with a solo shot in the first inning off losing pitcher Jerry Tyson. Des- / Photo by Scott D. Weaver Shortstop Jason Marshall (right) tags Mario Cottorbut at second after he stepped off the bag in the fourth inning. ignated hitter David Rollen had a solo shot in the fourth. Second baseman Trey Witte had a two-run home run in the sixth. Witte said the Aggies’ offensive perfor mance Tuesday night was just what they needed after last weekend where they dropped two of three games to the Bears. “I think everybody was ready to get back out here and get into the flow of things,” Witte sai. “We wanted to play ball like we knew w/ could play so we could get ready for thi/weekend. F.verybody was looking forwai/ to tonight.” Ev^ybody except the Bearkats. Last time the t\o teams met in Huntsville, the Aggies were£oming off a late doubleheader the nigl/before. This time, they had plenty of rest It showed. “They’re -up for us every time we play them, and I knew they’d be ready for us to night — especially since they beat us last time at their place,” Witte said. “It’s kind of good playing them because we came out of a tough series last weekend, and are coming up on an important week end against Rice.” Ultra Hot Graphics Solar Guard window tinting 846-5091 301 Texas Ave., C.S.
