POST OAK MALL 25-7 softball team starts tournej p By VINCE SNYDER Of The Battalion Staff The Lady Aggies softball team will begin play today in Fullerton, Calif., hoping to continue their suc cess in the 1990 season, as they com pete in the 11th annual 16-team Pony Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Competition begins today with pool play and will continue Thurs day and Friday. Bracket play begins Friday evening with the championship game set for Sunday at 2 p.m. A&M enters this weeks play with a 25-7 overall record, and has won 18 of its last 20 games. “Right now, the team is ahead of where I thought they would be at this point in the season,” A&M coach Bob Brock said. “If we do well in California, I think we can begin looking realistically at reaching our goal of receiving an NCAA bid.” The Lady Aggies won back-to- back tournaments within the last two weeks, including their own Aggie In vitational II. A&M won the Houston Classic last week and their own tour nament the week before. The Houston Classic tournament started out roughly for the Lady Ag gies, as the team had to forfeit their opening game to Temple after Brock was ejected from the game. 1 lowever, A&M came back tow. straight, including a 5-1 victory South Carolina in the champion! game. The Lady Aggies had six pb hit above .300 while the teara .309 for the tournamnet. Senior nee Blaha and Freshman At H ughes averaged .500 at the while Freshman Missy Young the Lady Aggies’ ace on the notching four wins, picking up:I saves and striking out 30 batters ® The Lady Aggies will finish the month by hosting a di header against Kent State at Aggie Softball Field, and will travel to Huntsville. T1 — Aggies (Continued from page 9) knew we were going to throw five pitchers. They got the work in and got ready for conference.” The Aggies open conference play Friday night when they host the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a 7 p.m. game at Olsen Field. The teams will wrap up the weekend series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. In the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, A&M used good per formances by both pitchers to hold off Southwestern until the Aggies could put the game away in the sixth inning. Gilbert allowed only two hits and two walks in four innings. He gave up the only run in the third, when the Aggies already led 2-0. With two outs, Pirate second base- man Michael Peck rocketed a triple off the wall in center field. Pitcher Don Childs followed with a line shot off the right field wall that scored Peck. Childs was thrown out on the play as he trotted to second base, ap parently thinking the ball had cleared the fence. Hughes came on in the fifth and shut the Pirates out the rest of the way. He scattered three hits and chalked two strike outs in three in nings of relief. Hughes picked up his first save of the season, while Gilbert evened his record to 3-3. The Aggies gave Hughes some breathing room in the sixth inning, their last at-bat in the seven-inning opener. They scored three runs on four hits. Thomas started the inning with a single that bounced off the first base bag and into the air. Williams I knocked him home with a triple the right-center field gap. Rouen followed with a RBI sinj and advanced to second on| groundout. First baseman Pyle singled him home to cap j scoring. The game was an example! 1990 Aggie-ball at its finest: siel pitching and clutch hitting. The f gies bunched seven of their ej hits into the two innings in km they scored. Johnson said that he was taj with his team’s hitting. g e with men on base,” Johnson said was pleased that we put double: tires in the hit column in theseci game, too.’ Holt said that the Aggieshavej proved at the plate. Snyder (Continued from page 9) order to advance to the Final 16. It dosen’t really matter how great you play during the regular season. All it takes is a little hope and determination to win a NCAA Championship. If you don’t believe me, just ask North Carolina. They defeated No. 1 Oklahoma with a last second, gut-wrenching shot to advance toward the championship game. OU was expected to be one of the final two teams, and out of nowhere their championship dream became a nightmare. You think those boys from Carolina weren’t destined to prove everyone wrong when people said, “Carolina over Oklahoma ... no way, dude!” And how about the little school from the West coast whose motto is not “Let’s win one for the Gipper”, but a different version entitled “Let’s win one for Hank”. Loyola Marymount suffered a great loss when one of their star players, Hank Gathers, collapsed during a conference tournament game and later died due to a heart condition. Many people thought the team couldn’t make it without him, and they wouldn’t have a chance in the NCAA Tournament. Wrong. It only seemed to bring the team closer together and prove that they were true contenders for the title of champions. This team gets my vote for "Till Determined To Win No Matterhf We Play” Award. If you ask me,I think they’ll make it to the Final Four ... and hopefully further. Afterall, they did prove themselves by beating No. 3 seed Michigan, last year’s NCAA champions, by a margin of 34| Sorry about that, Coach Fisher | You already had your dream season by winning last year. It’s [in to step aside and let some other “wing and a prayer” team takeaslj at No. I. So once again, this March Madness has proven to beadmefi college teams to show whatthey'itl made of. Even if they are ranked! the bottom of the pile. "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE S" DANA CAHVEY Eddie Farrell is a con man. He's out of luck, out of time and out of money.
