The Dallas Morning News re ported Penders had been scheduled Monday to have a formal interview for the vacant University of Florida position, but it was canceled because Texas is still in the NCAA tourna ment. According to the report, Penders and Florida Athletic Director Bill Arnsparger were still expected to talk about the position after the sea son. Penders, arriving in Austin Mon day with the Longhorns, dismissed the talk as rumor. “There’s two rumors about coaches: One is he’s going to get Fired and the other he’s leaving. I’d rather have them say I’m leaving in stead of getting Fired,” he said. “I have no desire to be anywhere else. I’m the Texas head coach. I’ve got a Five-year contract and I’d love to retire here, but these rumors are going to go on,” he said. Penders is in the second year of a long-term contract that reportedly is worth more than $200,000 per year, including fringe beneFits. He has compiled a 48-17 record in two sea sons at Texas, a school that made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1979 last year. Texas beat No. 10 Purdue 73-72 and Xavier defeated George town 74-71. “We’ve been Fighting for recogni tion and these kids deserved it,” Pen ders said after the victory over Pur due. “There’s no question Texas is not known for its basketball pro gram. Football is king in the state and that’s not going to change.” Still, Penders indicated last week that he didn’t mind the situation. “I don’t ever want us to be a bas ketball school. I go to a football game at Texas and there’s 82,000 people there and they’re all quar terbacks. At a basketball game, they don’t know what’s going on, if I should be in man or zone. “I stand up and give a traveling motion and you’ve got 14,000 peo- Photo by Fredericks Th Texas basketball coach Tom Penders soon may be interviewing ® iedl for the head coaching job at the University of Florida. pie doing the same thing. That’s how it is in football." Penders was reprimanded by Southwest Conference Commis sioner Fred Jacoby for criticizing of ficials after a Jan. 25 game at Arkan sas, and could face a suspension for public criticism after his loss to Houston in the SWC tournament fi nals this month. But he had no trou ble with the officials here. "I d like to send a limo andbri them down to Texas for everyone our games,” Penders said, cal: them great. “We had no advantage.
