Page 4 The Battalion Wednesday, February 7,1991 Movie (Continued from page 1) Wolling said. Wolling and DeWoody estimate there are 50 copies of the petition circulating around campus. They said they are unsure of the exact number of copies or the number of signatures they have right now be cause friends have been making cop ies of the petition to give to other people to circulate. When asked about the response they’ve gotten concerning the peti tion, DeWoody said it’s been pretty “cut and dry.” “People are either for or against it,” he said. “There is really no mid dle of the road. Fifty percent of the people we approach usually sign the petition.” Wolling and DeWoody said that by showing the movie, A&M is con tradicting what it stands for. “A&M frequently promotes awareness of date rapes and other such crimes, and our belief is that pornography of any kind can poten tially lead to sex crimes,” Wolling said. DeWoody agreed. ^ “Showing the movie is like adding fuel to the fire,” he said. Parr said Aggie Cinema does not regret shov/ing the movie. “We chose the film because, based on the fact synopsis we had about We chose the film because ... it fit in with the goals of programming (in Aggie Cinema).” — Lance Parr, Aggie Cinema chairman the movie, it fit in with the goals of programming (in Aggie Cinema) to bring alternative culture and view points,” he said. “It was something you wouldn’t normally see by turn ing on cable TV or renting a video — certainly nothing you’d see in an American cinema.” This movie, along with other Ag gie Cinema programs, went through an approval process before being shown to students, he said. A sub-committee within Aggie Cinema researches international movies available by reading reviews and watching for industry comment, Parr said. Then the general commit tee votes on the movies they feel are best. Decisions are based on plot syn opses and countries from which the films come. The films then go to the Program Review Committee, an approval committee in the MSC, and also to the MSC Council before a final deci sion is reached. Mike Conway, executive vice pres ident of programming in the MSC and chair of the PRC, said the com mittee took extra measures to ensure this was a quality movie before ap proving it. “At PRC, we were concerned so we reviewed the movie which is not typical for us to do. ... We also con tacted two French professors and asked them whether they knew any thing about the film and what they thought about it,” he said. Although the professors were not familiar with that particular film, Conway said, they assured the a® mittee that the main actor and director of the movie were pro®, nent in France, and are associate! with quality films. “We gave this film close scrutim l so I don’t think anybody (on PRC | has any doubts that we made tit I right decision to bring the movie | Conway said. Parr said Aggie Cinema is anopet committee and welcomes any sty dents who would like to be parto) the movie selection process andha\t| an interest in international cinema Aggie Cinema meets every Motvl day in Rudder Tower.
