By CLAY RASMUSSEN Of The Battalion Staff Texas A&M men’s basketball Coach John Thornton is looking to ut the fun back into Aggie basket- all. Winning two of his last three games must have Thornton smiling ear to ear. “Fun ... that’s what this game is all about,” Thornton said. “I just want the players to have fun and I want the fans to have fun.” The Aggies will look to enjoy themselves Saturday night at the ex pense of the resurgent Baylor Bears. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. A&M, 11-11 overall, 4-4 in the Southwest Conference, won’t have an easy time with Baylor, 11-8 and 3- 5 in SWC play. The Bears have won their last four games. A&M returns home to G. Rollie White Coliseum after splitting two games on the road. The Aggies dropped their fourth By ALAN LEHMANN Of The Battalion Staff The Texas A&M Lady Aggies will open the second half of conference E lay Saturday afternoon when they ost the Baylor Bears. The 2 p.m. basketball game will be played at G. Rollie White Coliseum. Tuesday, A&M lost to Texas Tech 74-62. With the loss, the Lady Aggies dropped to 4-4 in Southwest Confer ence and 12-7 overall. Baylor fell 88-81 to Southern Methodist Wednesday. The Bears are 0-8 and 3-16 for the season. Although A&M thrashed Baylor 68-52 in Waco earlier this season, A&M Coach Lynn Hickey isn’t over looking Baylor. “This is an important game for us,” Hickey said. “Baylor has worked real hard this year. They’ve got two guards (Jennifer King and Charlene Hudlin) who will really go after you.” Even though they’re in sixth place, the Lady Aggies are only one game out of third place. A&M will depend on guards La- Tanya Irving, Lisa Herner and Yvonne Hill. Southwest Conference loss earlier this week to Houston, 108-90 at Hofheinz Pavilion, but exploded last Wednesday night, drubbing Texas Tech in Lubbock, 101-85. Even with the loss to Houston, Thornton is pleased with his team. “In the last three games, we’ve av eraged 93 points per game,” Thorn ton said. “We’ve been able to take advan tage of the transition game and have really quickened the pace.” In addition to speeding things up on the court, the Aggies have also displayed some high flying antics. A&M forwards Darren Rhea and David Harris have taken every op portunity to stuff the ball through the hoop. Even 6-2 guard Freddie Ricks got into the slam dunk act Wednesday against Tech. “He went through a six-foot-ten- inch forward to stuff (the ball),” Thornton said. “It was really amaz ing. I’m just waiting for one of those guys to shatter the backboard.” Herner was named the SWC player of the week for her play last week. She had 34 points in A&M’s back- to-back wins over Rice and Houston. In the Houston game, she had a career-high 28 points as she went 9- for-12 from the field and 10-for-ll from the freethrow line. The Lady Aggies enter the game with three players averaging better than 10 points per game. Junior center Louise Madison leads the starters, averaging 13 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Hill and Irving average 1 1.6 and 10.5 points per game, respectively. Baylor is led in scoring by sopho more forward LaNita Luckey who is averaging 19.2 points and nine re bounds per game. Guard Jennifer King is averaging 11.2 points and 1.9 rebounds. As a team, the Lady Aggies are av eraging 74 points per game, and al lowing only 67 points. The Bears are scoring only 64 per game, but allowing 81 points. If the Lady Aggies win, it would mark their sixth consecutive victory over the Bears, and tie the series his tory at 17 wins for each team. In order to beat the Bears, Thorn ton said the Aggies will have to play mistake-free basketball. Baylor uses a man-to-man defense and is capable of rattling offenses and forcing the turnover, something that has haunted A&M all season. The Aggies, despite the loss to Houston, are hot. Harris already has broken former A&M forward Rudy Wood’s single season blocked shot record of 68. Guard Lynn Suber continues to dominate from three-point range. Suber is third in the SWC three- point percentage shooters with a 44 percent accuracy. He already owns the A&M single season record for three-pointers made (55). And of course, Tony Milton con tinues to be one of the SWC’s most consistent players. With a game-high 25 points, Milton has scored in dou ble figures in 21 of 22 games. Milton also is on pace to break the SWC re cord for assists. Houston’s Reid Getty owns that record with 135. Rose denying gambling on baseball GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Pete Rose, faced with a new accu sation Thursday from a former housemate that he bet on base ball, repeated his denial that he wagered on the game. His former friend, Tommy Gioiosa, said in a Cincinnati tele vision interview Thursday that he watched Rose call hookies and place bets on Reds’ games. Gioiosa made the new accusa- ... tion just before he began serving a five-year prison sentence Thursday For transporting co caine and hiding Rose's racetrack winnings from the internal Reve nue Service. When asked to respond to Gioiosa’s statement before a speech he gave to students at the Lniversity of Florida Thursday night, Rose said, “That’s a closed issue as far as I’m concerned. I can’t prove I didn’t. Obviously you can’t prove a negative.” Rose, who was banned for life from baseball last Aug. 24 after admitting to illegal gambling, got a standing ovation before and af ter the speech from about 1,000 students. “I’m trying to forget about 1989, hut thev are bringing it up ; again today, said Rose, Lady Aggies trying to cage Lady Bears A&M one game out of third place ASSIGNMENT MAURITANIA: TEACH LOCAL FARMERS THE IMPORTANCE OF CROP ROTATION.
