Oilers hire coaches HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Oilers coach Jack Pardee took the first step toward implementing a full-time run-and-snoot offense Tuesday by naming Kevin Gil- bride as offensive coordinator. The Oilers also announced a contract extension for General Manager Mike Holovak and named former Oilers linebackers coach Floyd Reese assistant gen eral manager. Gilbride was the Oilers quar terbacks coach last season under former coach Jerry Glanville, now head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. “We’ll be focusing on the one- back attack and I believe we’ll be able to take it a step further,” Gil bride said. Under Gilbride’s tutelege last season, quarterback Warren Moon had his best season in the NFL and earned the starting as signment in the Pro Bowl. The Oilers ran a version of the run-and-shoot called the Red Gun, with four wide receivers and Moon in a shotgun position. The Oilers also used a two-back set. Now the Oilers will concentrate on the run-and-shoot, Pardee said. “The Oilers have been using a Red Gun the last three years and when you look at the percentage of the yardage made, a big per cent has been out of the Red Gun,” Pardee said. “It has so many new things we can do offensively, so many weap ons that we’re going to devote our time to that.” Ags (Continued from page 7) output, averaging 12 points per game, amassing a career-high 26 points against Houston. Tech, on the other hand, while flourishing defensively, is struggling to generate offense. Derex Butts, the Red Raiders’ leading scorer, is averaging 13 points per game. That’s almost dou ble what the other four starters aver age. However, Thornton is still wary of the down-and-out Red Raiders. “They’re just in a rut that when it goes bad, it snowballs,” Thornton said. The Aggies also are in danger of working themselves into a losing streak. After dropping three straight conference games to SMU, Texas and Arkansas, A&M basketball was rocked with the loss of Shelby Met calf, the Aggies’ coach of 27 years. Suddenly Metcalf, not basketball, was on everyone’s mind. “It was a tough situation,” Thorn ton said. “I’ve had tremendous sup port from people close to the situa tion — students, faculty and administration. “We couldn’t block something like that out. But we couldn’t let it get in our way either.” The team responded well in the game following Metcalfs removal, defeating Rice 89-82, giving Thorn ton his first win as A&M’s head coach. Things looked bright for the Ag gies, who seemed to rally around Thornton after the loss of Metcalf. But the Aggies dropped their fourth SWC game to the Cougars. Thornton now wants A&M to re group, put the Metcalf affair out of their minds and just have fun. Lady Ags (Continued from page 7) Farst converted the technical shotto give the Lady Red Raiders a four-point lead, 39-35. It got worse. On the inbounds pass, Tech’s Kelly Shilling made a driving layup and was fouled on the play by A&M’s LaTanya Irving. Shilling converted the three-point play to put Tech up, 42-35. The Lady Aggies couldn’t over come the series, and Tech went on to lead by as much as 17 with 6 minutes left in the game. A&M did make a late charge, cutting the Tech lead to nine points with :52 left, 68-59. Hickey said Tech’s defense was a definite factor in the loss. “Tech changed defenses,” she said. “They sank so much on man- to-man that I thought our outside game would be stronger.” Madison led the Aggies with 17 points an six rebounds. Lori Dillard added 15 points. Farst was the high scorer for the Red Raiders. Lynch also had 16 points and seven rebounds. “I think we played tentatively and LaTanya didn’t play her normal game,” Hickey said. “We can’t let up now. I think we’ll be a better team over the next eight games, and we still have the opportunity to finish with a good seed in the conference standings. “Possibly, we’ll peak by tourna ment time.” With the loss, the Lady Aggies dropped to 12-7 overall, 4-4 in the Southwest Conference. Tech im proved to 12-7, 5-3. The Lady Aggies host Baylor Sat urday at G. Rollie White Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Snyder (Continued from page 7) And what about picking teams at the begining of a game? If we shorter guys don’t know either of the two team captians, then we can safely assume that we won’t get picked. Unless of course there is no one left to pick from, and you’ll hear that all too familiar saying, “I guess we’ll take him.” Don’t you hate when that happens? Some may think the game of basketball is for tall guys only. Whether it’s on the playground or on the National Basketball Association level. True, basketball players nowadays are slammin’ and jammin’ left and right with the greatest of ease. And there has been talk about raising the average basketball goal from 10 feet to 11 feet. But what about us shorter players? We didn’t pick our height. And a lot of smaller guys can dojust as much with the “jam” on a lower goal. As a matter of fact. Some little guys don’t need a fitted goal. Case in point—Spud Webb. This 5-8 gaurd has not only proved himself by playing in the NBA, but has also won a dunk contest during an NBA all-star game. Yes, this little bundle of energy even beat out some of the great “big men” in the league during this contest. Such as Jordan, Clyde “The Glide” Drexeler, and fellow teammate Dominique Wilkins. I bet if Webb made a great pass in a pickup game everyone would give him high-fives and slap him on the back and say, “Great pass, little man”. I guess the next step for us shorter guys is to establish NBA recognition. God knows Webb probably went through the same stuff as me and my fellow “short” friends did.
