In September, Sierra Club membership jumped 15 percent, from 200 to 235 members. Many of the new members are students, Worsham said. “The people who are in it (the Sierra Club) appreciate the prob lems that are arising in the environ ment because of carelessness,” Worsham said. In addition to its efforts to edu cate, the Sierra Club sponsors monthly outings. “When people go outdoors and see something, they appreciate it more,” Worsham said. He said ap preciation today means concern for and understanding of the problems that threaten the environment. Worsham founded the Texas En vironmental Action Coalition, a cam pus organization of which he is vice president. Liz Edwards, co-president of TEAC, said the 150-member group is involved in direct action. She was a member of the Green Earth Society, a campus organization that no longer exists. When the Green Earth Society dissolved because of waning interest, Edwards went to TEAC’s first meeting in February. She said she saw changes that had to be made in the organization, and she since has been an officer and a member. Edwards said TEAC gave her an opportunity to do something about the environment. She said the Green Earth Society was not a direct-action organization, and its meetings con sisted of 10 people showing up to watch movies. But TEAC members get con cerned and then they get others con cerned, Edwards said. “People from diverse back- g rounds come together and work ard to make changes in the envi ronment,” she said. “I think that’s one reason it appeals to so many people. “I want to see changes made be fore we run out of water — before we can’t step out in our backyard and breathe fresh air.” T, such as homelessness and poverty, are actually second to environmental concerns. “I don’t see much of a difference if (people) don’t have a safe place to live,” she said. “Man has always fought nature. “Nature’s starting to lose, and that’ll mean a losing battle for every body.” Another local environmew; group is Ducks Unlimited. MikePi 1 ermo, owner of Palermo Taxidera in Bryan and member of the Dud Unlimited banquet committee, sai: the group focuses on raisingmond for improving breeding and feediK grounds for ducks. “If it wasn’t for that, we vve have as many birds as we do §*' Palermo said. “(But) it doesn't improve life for ducks.” Mike Byington, Ducks Unlimited district chairman, said the group to | worthwhile projects that bend!® 1 other animals as well as the emit! environment. Birds such as whooping crane eagles, pheasants and doves benef; from the group’s restoration pri| jects, he said. Ducks Unlimited helps over 6 wildlife species, he said. The habit; of mule deer, white tail deer and moose are protected by Ducks Un limited. Some environmental groups, as the Audubon Society, are vet] specialized in their interests. Arnold, president of the Audute Society, said the society focuses adrI ities for Brazos Valley bird lovers. “We don’t go out and promoteen vironmental issues,” Arnold said “Our main purpose is to provide focal point to look at birds in thisr gion.” LONDON $229 PARIS $269 MADRID $269 TOKYO $509 RIO $379 St. Maarten $205 ONE WAY FROM HOUSTON ALSO TEACHER and BUDGET FARES!
