College administrators credit the trend to state laws that have raised the drinking age to 21, stricter rules about alcohol on campuses, chang ing student attitudes and the schools’ recognition of alcohol abuse on cam pus. Unlike the traditional campus snack bar or coffeehouse, many of the new clubs are outfitted with ex pensive sound systems, large-screen “The alternative has to be just as appealing as the real thing,” says Ryan, the faculty adviser to Sneak ers, the school’s non-alcoholic dance club opened in 1986 at the request of students. Creating a dance club can be ex pensive. Gettysburg College spent about $300,000 to convert six bowling lanes below the swimming pool into The Dive, which opened in March with a glass-topped bar and plenty of blue neon, says B.J. Davisson, direc tor of the college’s Union Building. Richard Blackburn, executive di rector for the Association of College Unions International, says these clubs face a daunting challenge in trying to keep students on campus and away from alcohol. “It’s difficult, and everyone izes it,” he says. “Some places; had some success with it. \ places have felt it’s not been a successful program.” Theodore’s Nightclub at the' versity of Notre Dame tries io, students with disc jockeys, con ans and novelty acts such asn cians, says Karen Leonard, adr to the alcohol-free nightspot “Up until recently it’s beenb as a f reshman hangout,” she “We’re trying to overcome that Debbie Anderson, assistanldt tor for program services at University, says schools need to vide alcohol-free outlets when dents can shed their stress. They laughed at the premise but still gave him advice. “I didn’t find any teen-age doctors when I did some research,” he says. “Most prodigies are in the arts. But it’s possible that a young person could become a doctor. There are no age limits.” Harris sees Doogie Howsfir as a normal kid who just happens to be a doctor. “The role’s purposely written to have all the qualities any kid would have,” hesays- Doogie is a prodigy who grad uated from Princeton at the age of 10, from medical school at 14, and now, at 16, is a hospital resident. He can perform surgery, but he’s just old enough to get a driver’s license. “The contrast is between him be ing a normal kid and being a doc tor,” says Harris. “Most of the hu mor comes from his age. Women say they don’t want a 16-year-old kid ex amining them. In the pilot, an adult attorney whined when I sewed up his rear and threatened to sue me. But Doogie with his intellect and savvy gets out of it. “Doogie’s an only child and his parents try to treat him as much like a normal teen-ager as possible. They realize he’s a genius and a doctor and that makes it more complicated. He told his mother the facts of life when he was 3 years old.” “Doogie Howser, M.D.” is the first show from Steven Bochco in his multi-series deal with ABC. Bochco, whose past co-creations were “Hill Street Blues” and “L.A. Law,” wrote the comedy with David E. Kelley. The show has been successful in the ratings, although not a major hit. The series also stars James B. Sik- king and Belinda Montgomery as Doogie’s parents, Lawrence Pressman as the hospital chief of services and Max Caseila as his teen age buddy. Taking time away from the set, Harris is interviewed in the building 20th Century Fox has built for Bochco, sitting on a bench in an open, atrium-like area. Like his character, Harris is 16 and attempts to lead a normal life while showing his own genius for acting. Before beginning the series, he lived in Albuquerque, N.M., and attended school there between mov ies. His parents, who are both attor neys, have moved temporarily to Los Angeles. Most recently, Harris starred with Faye Dunaway and Richard Wid- mark in “Cold Sassy Tree,” a turn- of-the-century drama on Turner Network Television. Last seaso was in the Hall of Fame produi “Home Fires Burning” and “Lo Her To Heaven.” He was in thei ture film “Clara’s Heart,” >; Whoopi Goldberg. He’s also had* eral guest roles in series, include role as a child evangelist who*2: ginning to stray toward evil on : Stryker,” with Burt Reynolds. Harris is a junior in high sdl this year and hopes to go on toll or New York University or the J versity of Southern California 1 not to study medicine, whichheii is too hard and takes too 1:4 hours. “I want to make the transuin. adult actor,” he says. “That's a:| barrier. Bands (Continued from page 4) But if guitar-oriented, chorus-fo cused rock is your thrill, then An other Day Older ... is the tape for you. In fact, “Another Day Older, A Little Less Sane,” the tape’s first cut, is a great single, showcasing a fine ly rical and musical arrangement by top-jack Dru Wilson (guitar and lead vocals). The rest of the tape, though, struggles along a predictable, guitar- based format (Had Binion also plays guitar) that doesn’t let loose until the finale “Living and Dying in 4/4 Time,” a tune that allows bassist Brian Lippman and drummer Jeff Zwolinski to jump in on the action. Both “Another Day Older, A Little Less Sane” and “Living and Dying In 4/4 Time” are first-class songs that I wish could have been supported with some of the flair and fervor of Binion’s Killtones or Wilson’s Street Pizza. Right now, the Kerouacs are too single-minded in sound. They need to package Wilson’s best straight- rock material with some diversity and originality that will set the band apart. The quartet is already moving towards success (they are playing all over the state and to good reviews in Austin and Houston) and only a cre ative lethargy can stop them.
