Date rape (Continued from page 1) a friend, relative, neighbor or BCRCC for assistance — but tell someone. They need support and guidance.” Authorities urge victims to notify the police and arrange to be taken to a hospital emergency room, whether they’re going to press charges or not. Bob Wiatt, director of security at the University Police Department, said if the victim changes her mind later and wants to press charges, the evidence is essential for prosecution. Often the victim just goes through the motions of life after she’s been raped, and what looms on the hori zon is no better. It’s the second phase a victim goes through — repression. Castoria said it’s the most difficult stage not only for the victim but for the people around her. “Usually, she’s in heavy denial and tries to act like everything is nor mal,” she said. “She wants to be who she was before the rape and wants everyone around her to think she’s fine. She’s not dealing with the prob lem — she’s pretending.” Sometimes victims are capable of blocking the rape out of their mind, Castoria said. “I’ve known cases where a woman doesn’t deal with it for years,” she said. “Another traumatic incident happens in their life and forces the rape to surface — then she’s dealing with two problems. “And family and friends will say, ‘w'hy is this bothering her all of a sudden? I thought she dealt with it,”’ Castoria said. But, hoj confront said the sooner the better. “They need to resolve what they’re feeling,” she said. “The rape has made them look at everything in a different way, and inside they’re never the same.” Once they realize the impact of the assault, victims are in the final stage, Castoria said. It begins with depression, and recovery follows when all issues related to the assault have been dealt with successfully. Castoria said all the phases are normal ways to deal with the spec trum of emotions they’re going through, “they shouldn’t feel abnor mal in any way, rather they should be glad they are alive.” Some people dispute the different methods of resistance a victim should use. Castoria said while the BCRCC doesn’t promote a partic ular method, they offer the options. If the victim is not experienced in A passive resistance is where the victim tries to outsmart the attacker — talking their way out of it, but not trying to talk him out of it. “This just causes the attacker to feel he has more power and it gives him great satisfaction,” Castoria said. “The victim could instead say something like, ‘I have AIDS’ or ‘I’m pregnant’ and this could trigger something in the attacker’s mind, and he might stop.” Castoria said another option is submitting to the rapist, which she points out, is not the same as con senting — it’s actually a way of fight ing for your life. People get tired of hearing it, but education is truly the best method of prevention. “It can happen to anyone,” Casto ria said. “People shouldn’t be par anoid, rather just be aware of all the possibilities.” The BCRCC, UPD and Student Affairs are a few' of the organiza tions that talk to groups about date rape. All three said they will come to any group that invites them, because “awareness and prevention are the keys. ” The BCRCC has a 24-hour hot line available for anyone who has questions or just wants to talk. The BCRCC and the Student Counseling office at A&M offer individual coun seling as well as support groups. If the victim doesn’t want to re port the rape to the police, they have the option of filing a “Jane Doe” re port, which notifies the police that an assault has occurred and gives them the details — but no name. This kind of report could lead police to an individual responsible for other assaults. Castoria said not everyone can go through the process of filing crimi nal charges against her attacker, “for some reason, be it emotional or whatever, they can’t and that’s where the ‘Jane Doe’ report really helps ev eryone involved.” ■j? 1! if Pise Literary Arts I f , ..11, "i r presents ‘The UnitzcCStates, ‘RevoCutionant ‘Russia, and the Rise of Czechoslovakia JT Lecture by, and a Ptgception in 9-Conor of Dr. ‘Betty ‘llnterberyer L. on tfie pubbeation of fter nezu boo({. ‘Hpv. 6, 1989 6:00 p.m. 212 M$l ‘Reception and Boo feigning foCCozvs in the PdSC Rorsytb Center (jobberies ^Admission is free
